The original text of Hexagram 59

The judgment

風水渙:亨,王假有廟,利涉大川,利貞。

The judgment opens with success, because dissolution is not only a loss; it can free what was frozen. The king approaching his ancestral temple shows how scattered people are brought back together: through a shared center, a common purpose, something everyone holds sacred. It is favorable to cross the great river, so bold ventures and decisive moves are supported now. The call to remain steady and upright reminds you that any renewal must be rooted in integrity, or it will simply scatter again.

The image

風行水上,渙;先王以享于帝立廟。

The Great Image shows wind moving over water, breaking up the surface and carrying spray far and wide. The early kings answered this kind of scattering by honoring the highest power with offerings and by building temples, giving people a place and a reason to gather. It asks you to reconnect with what is truly meaningful, and to create shared rituals, values or traditions that can hold people together when circumstances pull them apart.

Hexagram 59 meaning

The meaning of Hexagram 59, Huan, is dispersion in two senses. On one hand, it describes things coming apart: a group losing cohesion, energy draining away, people drifting in different directions. On the other hand, it describes the dissolving of what has become stuck, such as hardened attitudes, frozen emotions, old divisions and selfish interests. The wisdom of the hexagram is to welcome the second kind of dispersion so that the first kind can be healed.

The lower trigram is Kan, water, which stands for danger and depth; the upper is Xun, wind, which stands for gentle penetration. Wind blowing across water loosens and spreads it, the way a mild spring wind breaks up the ice on a river. Wind over water is also an old image of a wooden boat on the current, which is why the judgment speaks of crossing the great river. What was blocked can now move, and what was isolated can travel.

The strong line in the fifth place, central and correct, is the ruler: a leader who dissolves tension with a great unifying message, the way sweat breaks a fever, and who opens their resources to others. The second line, also firm and central, finds a stable support in a time of upheaval. The lower lines describe letting go of one's own ego and grievances, while the fourth line goes further, breaking up cliques and factions so that a far larger community can form. Its remark that scattering can build a hill is one of the hexagram's key paradoxes.

Huan is paired with Hexagram 60, Limitation, which is the same figure turned upside down. Where Limitation draws clear boundaries, Dispersion loosens them. When you receive Huan, consider what in your life has become rigid or divided, and what shared purpose could bring it together again. It is a hexagram of thaw, reconciliation, release and renewal, and of the trust needed to let something dissolve before you know what will take its place.

Hexagram 59 in love and relationships

In love, Hexagram 59 points to a thaw. Coldness, pride or old resentments are ready to melt, and the walls between two people can come down if both are willing to let go of defensiveness. If you are single, this is a time to release past hurts and loosen the self-protective habits that keep new people at arm's length; openness will do more than strategy. If you are dating, shared experiences, travel or meaningful rituals can draw you closer. In a committed relationship, Huan can warn of drifting apart, each partner absorbed in separate worries, and its remedy is to reconnect around what you both value: a shared project, a regular ritual, a common picture of the future. For reconciliation, the outlook is hopeful when both people can set their pride aside. The top line adds that sometimes the healthiest form of dispersion is distance, so take care to tell the difference between a bond worth restoring and one you are better off leaving.

Hexagram 59 for career and money

At work, Huan often appears during reorganizations, team splits, scattered priorities or low morale. The hexagram advises breaking down silos and rivalries and gathering people around a clear, inspiring purpose; a leader who communicates a strong vision and shares credit and resources can reunite even a fractured team. It also favors bold moves, such as a relocation, international work, a career change or a project that crosses traditional boundaries, since crossing the great river is explicitly supported. In your studies, dissolving rigid assumptions makes room for real understanding. With money, be aware that resources can scatter easily, so stay mindful of where they are flowing rather than letting them drain away unnoticed.

What Hexagram 59 advises now

Act early at the first signs of division, the way a strong horse brings timely help. Let go of grudges, defensiveness and the need to be right. Reconnect with a shared purpose, a meaningful ritual or a community that steadies you, and be generous with what you have. Avoid clinging to factions, nursing old resentments or trying to hold things together by force; what is frozen needs warmth, not pressure. If you asked a yes or no question, Huan leans toward yes for change, travel, release and reconciliation, especially when it means moving beyond the old status quo. If your question was about keeping things exactly as they are, the answer leans toward “not in the old form.”

Changing lines of Hexagram 59

  1. Line 1 · 初六

    用拯馬壯,吉。

    象曰:初六之吉,順也。

Line 1, rescue with a strong horse: the dispersion is only beginning, and this is the moment to act. Bring in strong help quickly and decisively, before misunderstandings harden into real division. Prompt action brings good fortune.

  2. Line 2 · 九二

    渙奔其机,悔亡。

    象曰:渙奔其机,得願也。

Line 2, hurrying to your support: when everything seems to be scattering, run toward what steadies you, whether a trusted person, a sound principle or a reliable routine. Leaning on that support lets you regain your balance and soften your own mistrust of others. Regret disappears.

  3. Line 3 · 六三

    渙其躬,无悔。

    象曰:渙其躬,志在外也。

Line 3, letting the self dissolve: you set aside personal interests, pride or comfort for the sake of a larger task. This kind of self-forgetting is not a loss but a release. There is no regret here, only the relief of no longer defending a narrow position.

  4. Line 4 · 六四

    渙其群,元吉。渙有丘,匪夷所思。

    象曰:渙其群,元吉;光大也。

Line 4, breaking up the faction: you step away from a clique or narrow circle to serve the wider good, and this brings the highest good fortune. From the scattering a hill rises, meaning a larger and more lasting gathering than the one you left behind. Ordinary thinking would not arrive at this approach, which is exactly why it works.

  5. Line 5 · 九五

    渙汗其大號,渙王居,无咎。

    象曰:王居无咎,正位也。

Line 5, a great proclamation that flows like sweat: a powerful, unifying message breaks the tension the way sweat breaks a fever, and the ruler opens the royal stores to share them with others. Clear words and real generosity at a time of division are exactly what is needed. There is no blame.

  6. Line 6 · 上九

    渙其血,去逖出,无咎。

    象曰:渙其血,遠害也。

Line 6, dispersing the blood: the danger here is real harm, and the advice is to take yourself and those close to you out of its reach. Going away and keeping your distance is not cowardice but wisdom. There is no blame in stepping out of a situation that can only wound.

Hexagram 59: common questions

Is Hexagram 59 good for love?

It can be, especially for healing a rift. Huan is the hexagram of thawing, so pride and resentment can melt and closeness can return. It is less favorable if you are trying to hold on to someone through pressure or control, because what it rewards is letting go.

What does Hexagram 59 mean in a yes or no question?

It leans toward yes when your question involves change, travel, release, renewal or reconciliation. It leans toward no when you hope to keep everything exactly as it was. In either case, timely action and a shared purpose improve the outcome.

What if line 4 is changing in Hexagram 59?

Line 4 is the most auspicious line of the hexagram. It describes leaving a narrow circle or faction behind in order to serve something larger, and it suggests that a broader, more lasting community can form as a result. It encourages you to think beyond your usual loyalties.

Is Hexagram 59 a good sign for moving or traveling?

Generally, yes. The judgment says that crossing the great river is favorable, and the image of wind over water suggests a boat setting out. As always, plan carefully and keep your purpose clear.
