The original text of Hexagram 55

The judgment

The judgment says that abundance brings success, that a true king can reach it, and that there is no reason for gloom: be like the sun at noon. Midday is the moment of greatest light, when the sun reaches into every corner at once. The quiet lesson is that noon does not last; after its highest point the sun begins to sink, just as the full moon begins to wane. Rather than worrying about this, the judgment asks you to shine fully now and share what you have while it is at its height.

The image

Thunder and lightning come together, power and clarity in a single moment. The wise person uses such a moment to settle disputes and carry out fair consequences. The image asks you to make the decisions you have been postponing while you see clearly and have the strength to act, and to resolve conflicts fairly rather than letting them linger.

Hexagram 55 meaning

The meaning of Hexagram 55, Feng (豐), is abundance in its fullest form. The lower trigram is Li, fire and lightning, standing for clarity; the upper is Zhen, thunder, standing for movement. Clear perception combined with decisive action produces greatness. This hexagram often appears when life is full: busy, successful, crowded with opportunities, people and responsibilities.

Yet the I Ching rarely praises a peak without a reminder of change. Abundance is like noon, when the brightest hour is also the turning point toward afternoon. The judgment's advice not to worry is not naive optimism but mature acceptance. Enjoy fullness without clinging to it and use it well while it lasts, because what you do at the peak shapes what happens on the way down.

The middle lines describe a strange darkness at noon. A thick screen or curtain blocks the light so completely that stars become visible in the middle of the day, an image often compared to an eclipse. This is what abundance can do: clutter, pride, busyness or flattery can hide the very light that made success possible. The fifth line, a soft line in the ruler's place, shows a leader who needs bright, capable people to bring clarity back.

The first and fourth lines are both solid, and the text calls them matching partners, energy and clarity meeting as equals. The top line shows the opposite: a magnificent house screened off from everyone, silent and empty for years. Abundance, then, is best shared. When you stay connected and generous, the peak becomes a blessing; when you wall yourself in, it becomes isolation.

Hexagram 55 in love and relationships

In love, Hexagram 55 often marks a full and vivid period: strong attraction, an active social life, a relationship at its high point or a celebration such as an engagement or wedding. For singles, it favors meeting someone who matches you in energy and clarity, and the first line encourages you to go toward such a person. If you are dating, enjoy the intensity but watch for shadows such as jealousy, misunderstanding or being so busy that you stop really seeing each other. Couples may be enjoying a peak and are reminded to nourish it rather than take it for granted, and to avoid the top line's mistake of closing themselves off from friends and family. For reconciliation, the second line is key: suspicion will not be overcome by pushing, but sincere and open feeling can clear the air. Abundance in love lasts longest when it is shared, not hoarded.

Hexagram 55 for career and money

At work, Feng describes a peak: success, recognition, expansion or a period of intense activity. It favors bold decisions, clear leadership and drawing capable people into your projects, as the fifth line suggests. It also asks you to stay humble and keep communication clear, because a successful team can easily become cluttered with ego, bureaucracy or blind spots. Plan for the next cycle while things are going well, rather than assuming growth will continue forever. In your studies, it can mark a high point of understanding or achievement that is worth consolidating. With money, it reflects a time of plenty and the wisdom of not overextending at the top, as a reflection rather than financial guidance.

What Hexagram 55 advises now

Act now, while you see clearly and have the energy, and make the decisions you have been postponing. Share your abundance, invite talented people in and keep your doors open to friends and allies. Avoid arrogance, isolation and the false belief that the peak will last forever. In a yes or no question, Feng leans yes, especially for matters that call for timely action; the opportunity is real now, so do not wait too long. Remember that it shows a tendency at a high point, not a permanent state.

Changing lines of Hexagram 55

  1. Line 1 ·

Line 1, meeting your matching partner: you encounter someone of equal strength who complements your clarity with energy. Even if you work side by side for a full cycle there is no blame, and going forward earns recognition. Seek out allies who match you and commit to the partnership wholeheartedly for its natural span.

  2. Line 2 ·

Line 2, the Big Dipper at noon: the screen is so thick that stars appear in daylight, your light is hidden and the person you would approach is clouded by doubt. Going to them directly would only stir suspicion and dislike. Instead, let sincere conviction show itself over time; genuine trust, quietly expressed, turns the situation to good fortune.

  3. Line 3 ·

Line 3, faint stars at midday and a broken right arm: the darkness is so complete that you cannot act effectively right now. This is not your fault, and there is no blame. Accept the temporary limitation, rest and wait for the light to return before attempting anything great.

  4. Line 4 ·

Line 4, meeting a partner of your own kind: the screen is still thick and the Dipper still shows at noon, but the darkness begins to lift because you find an ally who balances you. Combining your strength with their clarity brings good fortune. Reach out to the right person and work together.

  5. Line 5 ·

Line 5, bringing in the brilliant: the leader draws capable people into the circle and listens to them. Blessings and praise follow, along with good fortune. Be open to talent and advice, and give credit generously.

  6. Line 6 ·

Line 6, the grand house with screened-off rooms: you peer through the gate and see no one, and for three years no one appears. This is the danger of pride and isolation at the height of success. Open your doors, reconnect with people and do not let abundance turn into loneliness.
