BaZi Compatibility for Any Two People
Free BaZi compatibility for any two charts: put in both people's birth details and see, without signing up, how your charts meet, from Day Masters and partner palaces to useful elements and the months ahead.

Check your compatibility for free
BaZi compatibility reads two Chinese birth charts together and asks how they meet: whether the two Day Masters attract or push, how the partner palaces sit side by side, and whether each of you carries what the other one needs. Because it starts from both people's full birth moment, it goes much further than matching zodiac animals, which only compares the years you were born. Put in the birth details for you and the other person, choose how you're connected, and the free check shows both day pillars, four levels of fit and the months of the coming year that run well for you both, with no sign-up.
This page explains what the calculator looks at and how to read what it shows, from stem combinations and branch clashes to useful elements and partner stars. It works for any tie, whether that's a partner, someone you like, an ex, a friend, a colleague or family, and for any two people, whatever their genders. None of it is a ruling on whether a relationship should exist. It's a map of where two charts pull together, where they rub, and what helps. When you want the whole story in words, Geumeum reads both charts together in a full BaZi compatibility report.
What is BaZi compatibility?
BaZi, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, turns a birth moment into eight characters: a heavenly stem and an earthly branch for each of the year, month, day and hour. The stem of the day pillar is your Day Master, the character that stands for you. The branch underneath it is traditionally called the spouse palace, the seat of your closest partnership. On this page we call it the partner palace, because it describes how you live closest to another person, whatever shape that closeness takes.
BaZi compatibility puts two of these charts next to each other and reads the links between them the same way a reader reads the links inside a single chart. Elements feed or control each other, stems combine or clash, and branches harmonize, clash, punish or harm. The result isn't one number. It's a portrait of a pair: where you're naturally drawn together, where everyday life gets bumpy, who supplies what, and how steady the ground is over time.
That's also why it's more useful than a pass or a fail. Two charts with plenty of clashes can make a lively, loyal pair once both people understand the friction, and two charts that combine beautifully still need looking after. Chinese birth chart compatibility describes the terrain; the two of you decide how to cross it.
What the free BaZi compatibility calculator shows
The form asks for the same details for both people: a birth date, solar or lunar; a birth time, or a tick if you don't know it; sex; and a birthplace, which sets the time zone and longitude, with true solar time as an option. Sex is only a calculation setting. It sets the direction of each person's luck pillars and the classical partner-star convention, and nothing else. Then you choose how you're connected (partner, someone you like, an ex, friend, colleague or business partner, or family) and, if you like, give the other person a nickname so the result reads naturally.
The free result needs no sign-up and stores nothing. It puts both day pillars side by side and shows four dimensions as levels, from very strong to needs real care, never as numbers. It tells you whether your day pillars form one of two classic patterns, heaven and earth combining or heaven and earth clashing, and it picks out the months of the coming year that run well for both of you, plus the stretch when it's wiser to go gently with each other. Here's what each part means:
- Attraction: the pull between the two charts, from Day Masters that combine, partner palaces that harmonize and, for romantic ties, partner stars. For friends, colleagues and family it appears as rapport, how easily you click.
- Day-to-day harmony: how smoothly ordinary life runs, read from how your partner palaces and the rest of your branches meet, with clashes, punishments and harms counting as friction.
- Support for each other: whether each chart is rich in the elements the other one needs, its useful elements, or in the ones that drain it.
- Long-term footing: how steady the ground is over time, built from harmony and support plus the day-pillar pattern and your two zodiac animals.
- Timing: the months of the coming year that run well for you both, and the months to go gently with each other.
Two Day Masters: combinations, clashes and Ten Gods
The first thing a reader compares is the two Day Masters. Five pairs of stems combine, a classical image of natural attraction, almost a promise: Jia with Ji, Yi with Geng, Bing with Xin, Ding with Ren, and Wu with Gui. A combination doesn't mean two people melt into one, but it does describe a pull that's easy to feel and just as easy to take for granted. Four other pairs clash: Jia with Geng, Yi with Xin, Bing with Ren, and Ding with Gui. Each is two stems of the same polarity, one controlling the other, two strong wills face to face, and they often bring spark and argument in the same breath.
Every other pair is read through the five-element cycles. If one Day Master's element produces the other's, as wood feeds fire or water feeds wood, the relationship tends to have a giver and a receiver. If you share an element, you're mirrors: quick to understand each other and sometimes competing for the same space. If one element controls the other, as metal cuts wood or fire melts metal, there's structure and pressure in the mix, which can be exactly what a chart needs or exactly what it finds tiring.
The calculator also names the Ten God each of you is in the other's chart, because a relationship rarely looks the same from both sides. If you're a Jia Wood Day Master and the other person is Ji Earth, they're your Direct Wealth, someone you look after and build something tangible with, while you're their Direct Officer, the steadying structure in their life. If they're Geng Metal instead, they're your Seven Killings, the one who pushes you, challenges you and makes you sharper. And here are the five stem combinations, in pictures:
- Jia and Ji: the tall tree and the garden soil, steadiness meeting care.
- Yi and Geng: the vine and the axe, softness drawn to directness.
- Bing and Xin: sunlight on fine jewelry, warmth meeting polish.
- Ding and Ren: a candle reflected in a deep river, close and quietly magnetic.
- Wu and Gui: the mountain and the rain, solid ground meeting subtle feeling.
Partner palaces and zodiac animals: how the branches meet
The second big comparison is between the two day branches, the partner palaces. This is where each chart keeps its most private self, so the way the two palaces meet carries a lot of weight in how ordinary days together feel. A six harmony between them tends to feel like being at home with each other. A clash feels like movement: two people who bring change into each other's lives, who argue and make up, and who rarely get bored.
Punishments and harms are subtler, more pebble in the shoe than storm, and they tend to show up as the same small misunderstanding coming round again. None of these decides anything on its own, and the same pair of branches matters more or less depending on what else each chart holds.
Your year branches, the zodiac animals, are compared the same way, but they weigh less, because the year pillar describes background and family more than private life. Plenty of Chinese astrology compatibility by birth date stops at the animals; here they're one factor among many. The calculator also checks the month and hour branches across both charts, giving the most weight to links that touch a partner palace and the least to links between the two hour pillars. For reference, these are the classic branch relationships:
- Six harmonies: Rat and Ox, Tiger and Pig, Rabbit and Dog, Dragon and Rooster, Snake and Monkey, Horse and Goat.
- Three harmonies, where any two of a trio form a half harmony: Monkey, Rat and Dragon (water); Pig, Rabbit and Goat (wood); Tiger, Horse and Dog (fire); Snake, Rooster and Ox (metal).
- Clashes, between opposite signs: Rat and Horse, Ox and Goat, Tiger and Monkey, Rabbit and Rooster, Dragon and Dog, Snake and Pig.
- Punishments: Tiger, Snake and Monkey; Ox, Goat and Dog; Rat and Rabbit; and a Dragon, Horse, Rooster or Pig meeting its own sign.
- Harms: Rat and Goat, Ox and Horse, Tiger and Snake, Rabbit and Dragon, Monkey and Pig, Rooster and Dog.
Who supplies what: useful elements across two charts
Every chart leans one way or another. A Day Master born in its own season with plenty of support runs strong, and usually benefits from elements that give its energy somewhere to go; one born out of season and short of support runs weak, and benefits from elements that feed it. Climate counts too: a chart born in deep winter wants warmth, and a midsummer chart wants moisture. The elements a chart benefits from are its useful, or favorable, elements, and the ones that tip it further off balance are its draining ones.
In BaZi compatibility this becomes a very practical question: is the other person's chart rich in what yours needs? The calculator weighs the five elements across the whole of the other chart against your useful elements, does the same in the other direction, and checks whether each Day Master's own element is one the other chart wants or one it finds draining. When the answer is good both ways, the support level is high, and it tends to feel as if the other person makes you more yourself. When one chart is heavy in what the other finds draining, time together can feel tiring in a way neither of you can quite name, even when you like each other a lot.
Take a Bing Fire Day Master born in deep winter, a sun on a cold day, who usually needs fire and wood. A partner whose chart is full of wood and fire brings warmth and encouragement just by being around. If that partner's chart is mostly water and metal instead, Bing may feel cooled and slowed in their company. That isn't anyone's fault, and it's very workable once you can see it: Bing simply needs some of that warmth from elsewhere too, from friends, from work and from the way the two of you spend your time.
Partner stars in romantic BaZi compatibility
For romantic ties, meaning a partner, someone you like or an ex, the calculator also checks a classical convention called the partner star. In a chart recorded as male, the Wealth stars, the element the Day Master controls, traditionally stand for a partner. In a chart recorded as female, it's the Officer stars, the element that controls the Day Master: Direct Officer and Seven Killings, the stars of authority and pressure. The calculator asks whether the other person's Day Master element is your partner star, and whether yours is theirs.
When it matches, people often say the other person felt like their type before they could explain why. When it doesn't, nothing is missing. Plenty of close partnerships run on other stars: on care and support, on shared projects and talent, or on the easy companionship of two people who are alike. The partner star is one more layer, not a requirement.
Same-sex couples are welcome. Sex in the form is a calculation setting: it decides the luck pillar direction and which version of the classical convention applies, and it changes nothing else in either chart. Many modern readers look at the Wealth and Officer stars together regardless of gender and give at least as much weight to the partner palaces. For friends, colleagues and family, the partner-star check is simply left out.
Combining or clashing day pillars, and the months ahead
Two day-pillar patterns get special mention. When the Day Masters combine and the partner palaces form a six harmony, as with a Jia Zi day and a Ji Chou day, it's called heaven and earth combining (tian he di he): stems and branches both reach for each other. When the Day Masters clash and the partner palaces clash too, as with Jia Zi and Geng Wu, it's heaven and earth clashing (tian ke di chong): the two pillars face each other head on.
Heaven and earth combining sounds like a jackpot, and it's a lovely thing to share, but it needs care to keep. A pair this easy can stop talking about hard things because nothing seems to need saying, and two people who combine strongly can blur into each other until one of them wants their edges back. Keep your own friends, keep saying what you want out loud, and the ease lasts.
Heaven and earth clashing is friction, not a sentence. It usually means two direct characters who move each other: lots of energy, lots of change, and arguments that flare fast and fade fast. The way through is structure. Agree on who decides what, pause a heated conversation and set a time to come back to it, and treat the difference as a skill set, since the person who clashes with you sees exactly what you miss.
Timing is the last piece. The calculator runs both charts through the twelve months of the coming year and marks the stretches that run well for you both, good for plans, trips, big conversations and decisions you want to make together. It also marks the stretch when the months are harder on both of you at once, when it's kinder to expect less, give more room and save the big talks for later. For romantic ties, a good stretch carries an extra note when one of its months combines with a partner palace, a sign that things between you tend to move.

BaZi Compatibility FAQ
Is the BaZi compatibility calculator free?
Yes. Both charts and the free result cost nothing and need no sign-up: the two day pillars side by side, the four levels (attraction or rapport, day-to-day harmony, support for each other and long-term footing), the day-pillar pattern if there is one, and the months of the coming year that run well for both of you or call for a gentler pace. The only paid part is the full BaZi compatibility report, which costs 100 credits, paid once and not a subscription. Follow-up questions to Geumeum about the report cost 5 credits per message.
What if I don't know one person's birth time?
Tick the unknown-time box for that person and the calculator builds a three-pillar chart, with the year, month and day but no hour pillar. The Day Master and the partner palace both live in the day pillar, so the heart of BaZi compatibility is still there. You lose the hour branch in the cross-chart links and a little precision in the element balance. If someone was born near midnight or on the day a solar term began, the day or month pillar can depend on the hour, so check a birth record if you can.
Does it work for same-sex couples, friends, colleagues or family?
Yes, for any two people. Sex is only a calculation setting, used for each person's luck pillar direction and the classical partner-star convention, and nothing in the result assumes the other person's gender. Choose the tie that fits: partner, someone you like, an ex, friend, colleague or business partner, or family. For friends, colleagues and family, attraction is shown as rapport and the partner-star check is left out, so the result is about how you click and work together.
What happens to the other person's birth details?
The free check stores nothing, and you can use a nickname for the other person instead of a name. If you're signed in and buy the full report, both charts are saved to your account's My charts so you can come back to them, and you can delete them anytime.
Can I use a lunar birthday?
Yes, for either person. Choose lunar and enter the date as it appears on the Chinese lunar calendar; if it falls in a leap month, mark it as one so it converts correctly. The chart itself follows the solar terms rather than the lunar months, so someone born in late January or early February may end up with a different year pillar, and a different zodiac animal, from the one a lunar calendar suggests.
How is this different from Chinese zodiac compatibility?
Zodiac compatibility compares two animals, the branches of your birth years, so everyone born in the same year gets the same answer. BaZi compatibility reads the whole of both charts: the two Day Masters, the partner palaces, the element balance and what each chart needs, the partner stars for romantic ties, and both people's timing. The animals are still in there, compared by harmony and clash like any other branch, but they weigh less than the partner palaces. BaZi also changes the animal at Li Chun, around February 4, not at Lunar New Year.
Our day pillars clash. Should we worry?
No. A clash between Day Masters or partner palaces describes friction and movement: two people who push each other, change each other and say things more directly than most. It doesn't decide whether a relationship lasts, and a lot of what makes a pair interesting comes from exactly that tension. The useful response is practical: agree on who decides what, build pauses into heated talks, and save the conversations that matter for the months the calculator marks as good for you both.
Can I check BaZi compatibility with an ex?
Yes. Choose the ex option when you pick the relationship. The reading looks at the same things it would for any romantic tie: what drew you together, where you snagged, and what each chart asked of the other. It won't push you to get back together, and it won't tell you to move on. That decision is yours, and the chart is there to help you understand the pattern, whichever way you go.
How accurate is BaZi compatibility?
Honestly, it describes tendencies, not outcomes. Once the birth data is right the calculations are exact, and the most reliable parts are the structural ones: how the Day Masters and partner palaces meet, and which elements each chart needs. What no chart can do is say whether two people will stay together, because that rests on choices, effort and everything else in your lives. Use it the way you'd use a good map, to see the terrain, find the easy paths and know where the steep parts are.
