The original text of Hexagram 58
The judgment
兌為澤:亨。利貞。
The judgment is brief and encouraging: there is success, and it pays to remain upright and steady. Joy opens doors that pressure cannot, because people respond more readily to warmth than to force. The call for steadiness is a safeguard, since cheerfulness without integrity slides into people-pleasing, empty charm or indulgence. Real joy is firm on the inside and gentle on the outside.
The image
麗澤,兌;君子以朋友講習。
The Great Image shows two lakes joined together, each keeping the other fresh so that neither dries up. Seeing this, the wise person gathers with friends to talk things through, study and rehearse together. It asks you to seek out the exchange of knowledge and good company, because learning that is shared stays alive in a way solitary study rarely does.
Hexagram 58 meaning
The meaning of Hexagram 58, Dui, is joy: the open, refreshing kind that spreads from person to person the way water spreads across a lake. Dui is also associated with the mouth, so this hexagram covers speech, conversation, persuasion and laughter. When it appears, the situation is usually favorable for connecting, communicating, teaching, celebrating and finding common ground, and a light touch often achieves more than heavy seriousness.
The lake trigram is doubled, and in each half a yielding yin line rests on top of two firm yang lines. This is the classic picture of healthy joy: strength and integrity within, gentleness and openness without. A lake is pleasant because its basin holds; take away the firm bottom and the water simply drains away. In the same way, cheerfulness without inner substance turns into flattery, and pleasure without limits turns into indulgence.
The six lines trace this difference step by step. The lower lines describe joy that comes from within: harmonious, content and sincere. The yin line in the third place seeks joy from outside by chasing amusement or approval, and the text calls this misfortune. Higher up come the struggle of weighing one pleasure against another, the danger of trusting something that slowly wears you down and, finally, a pleasure that leads you along wherever it goes. Even the strong, central fifth line receives a warning, precisely because those in a good position are often surrounded by flatterers.
Dui is paired with Hexagram 57, The Gentle Wind, which is the same figure turned upside down. Wind works inward, quietly and persistently; the lake opens outward, freely and generously. Both are about influence, but Dui influences through delight. This hexagram invites you to enjoy what is good in your life, to share it with others and to notice the difference between joy that nourishes and pleasure that merely distracts.
Hexagram 58 in love and relationships
In love, Hexagram 58 is one of the warmest signs in the I Ching. It favors flirtation, laughter, easy conversation and the kind of friendship that turns into romance. If you are single, social settings, shared interests, classes and groups (the image of friends learning together) are fertile ground, and openness and humor make you magnetic. If you are dating, enjoy the lightness, but notice whether the charm is backed by consistency, since lines 3 and 6 warn about pleasure that is all surface. In a committed relationship, Dui asks you to keep talking, keep playing and keep delighting in each other, and to be honest rather than merely agreeable. For reconciliation, a friendly, unpressured conversation can reopen the connection, but be careful about returning only because the attention feels good; ask whether the joy is mutual and real.
Hexagram 58 for career and money
In career matters, Dui supports anything built on communication: sales, teaching, coaching, hospitality, customer service, media, public speaking and team leadership. Good morale is one of your most valuable assets right now, and a pleasant working atmosphere will carry projects further than pressure. Study groups, workshops and mentoring are especially favored, in line with the image of friends discussing and practicing together. The warnings concern flattery and office politics: line 5 cautions against trusting someone who tells you only what you want to hear, and line 3 against chasing approval. Financially, Dui can bring pleasant gains and generous exchanges, but it also points to spending for enjoyment, so watch impulse purchases and choose pleasures that leave you better off.
What Hexagram 58 advises now
Now is a good time to open up, share, connect and communicate. Speak kindly and honestly, celebrate what deserves celebrating and spend time with people who lift you up. Learn with others rather than alone. At the same time, keep your center: avoid flattery in both directions, avoid chasing validation and avoid pleasures that leave you emptier than before. If you asked a yes or no question, Dui leans toward yes, especially for matters involving people, agreements and communication. If the plan depends on someone's charming promises, check the substance first; the answer then becomes “yes, if it holds up.”
Changing lines of Hexagram 58
Line 1 · 初九
和兌,吉。
象曰:和兌之吉,行未疑也。
Line 1, joy in harmony: this is contentment that is quiet and self-sufficient, not dependent on anyone's approval. You are at ease with yourself and with others, with no hidden agenda. Good fortune follows, so keep your pleasures simple and genuine.
Line 2 · 九二
孚兌,吉,悔亡。
象曰:孚兌之吉,信志也。
Line 2, joy grounded in sincerity: your happiness rests on inner truth, so you are not drawn into the questionable amusements that may be close at hand. Because you stay faithful to your own standards, regret disappears. Trust your integrity, and others will learn to trust you.
Line 3 · 六三
來兌,凶。
象曰:來兌之凶,位不當也。
Line 3, joy that comes seeking: this is pleasure chased from outside, through distraction, indulgence or the approval of others. An inner emptiness invites whatever comes along, and the text calls this misfortune. Turn inward, find what actually satisfies you and refuse the easy thrill.
Line 4 · 九四
商兌,未寧,介疾有喜。
象曰:九四之喜,有慶也。
Line 4, weighing pleasures with an uneasy heart: you are torn between a higher kind of joy and a lower, more tempting one, and there is no peace until you choose. Firmly separating yourself from the harmful influence brings real happiness. Make the clean decision rather than keeping both options open.
Line 5 · 九五
孚于剝,有厲。
象曰:孚于剝,位正當也。
Line 5, trusting what wears you down: even a strong, well-placed person can be eroded by flattering or corrosive influences. Placing your trust in such people or habits carries real danger. Stay alert, judge by actions rather than pleasant words and protect what matters to you.
Line 6 · 上六
引兌。
象曰:上六引兌,未光也。
Line 6, joy that leads you along: pleasure is now pulling the strings, and you risk following it wherever it goes. The text gives no verdict, because the outcome depends on whether you notice and take back control. Ask who or what is leading you, and whether you would choose that direction with a clear head.
Hexagram 58: common questions
Is Hexagram 58 good for love?
Yes, it is one of the most affectionate hexagrams in the I Ching. It favors warmth, laughter, open communication and romance that grows out of friendship. Its main caution is to make sure the joy is sincere rather than built on flattery or surface charm.
What does Hexagram 58 mean in a yes or no question?
It leans clearly toward yes, particularly when the question involves people, agreements, social plans or communication. The condition is integrity: the outcome tends to be good when everyone's intentions are honest. If something seems too pleasant to be true, check it before you commit.
What if line 3 is changing in Hexagram 58?
Line 3 warns against chasing pleasure, distraction or approval from outside yourself, and it is the most clearly unfavorable line in Dui. It asks you to step back from what tempts you. Look for a source of contentment that does not depend on others.
What does Hexagram 58 say about an ex or someone I miss?
Dui shows that warm, easy contact is possible and may feel very good. Whether it lasts depends on sincerity, so look for consistent actions, not just pleasant words. If you notice you are being pulled along by nostalgia or flattery, as in line 6, slow down and decide with a clear head.
