Hexagram 23: Bo, Splitting Apart

Hexagram 23, Bo (Splitting Apart), describes a time of erosion, when what was solid is being worn away bit by bit. It is not a moment to push forward but to protect your foundations, preserve what matters and wait for the turn that follows in time.

The original text of Hexagram 23

The judgment

山地剝:不利有攸往。

The judgment is short and blunt: it is not favorable to go anywhere or start anything. When the forces of decline are strong, bold action tends to speed up the collapse rather than prevent it. This is not a call for despair but for restraint. Go along with the time, hold still, protect what is essential and let the destructive phase exhaust itself.

The image

山附地上,剝;上以厚下,安宅。

The mountain rests on the earth, slowly crumbling onto the plain. Those above secure their homes by being generous to those below. A mountain stands only as long as its base is broad and firm, and a household, team or community stands only as long as its foundation is cared for. The image asks you to strengthen your base: support the people who support you, and attend to basics before ambitions.

Hexagram 23 meaning

The meaning of Hexagram 23 is visible at a glance: five yielding lines rise from below beneath a single strong line at the top. The dark is pushing upward against the last remaining light. Bo means to strip, peel or split apart, and the hexagram describes erosion, the gradual undermining of something that once seemed secure. It might be a relationship, a job, a reputation, an institution or simply your own energy.

The trigrams point to the right response. Below is Kun, the Earth, yielding and accepting; above is Gen, the Mountain, the image of stillness. Together they advise going along with the time and knowing when to stop. Resistance at this point usually burns up strength that will be needed later. Quiet endurance is not weakness; it is a deliberate choice to save your energy for the moment when it can make a difference.

The lines use the image of a bed being cut away. First the legs go, then the frame, then the damage reaches the skin of the person lying on it. Each step brings the threat closer, which is exactly how erosion works: unnoticed at first, then suddenly personal. Line three is the exception, the one yielding line that breaks with its peers to support the strong line above, and line five shows the turn, with the yielding lines lining up in good order like fish on a string to receive favor.

In the old calendar of waxing and waning hexagrams, Bo belongs to the ninth month, late autumn, when leaves fall and fields lie bare. Yet the top line holds a large fruit that is not eaten, the seed from which new growth can come, and the very next hexagram is Fu, Return, in which the light comes back from below. Bo is a hard season, but it is only a season. Protect the seed, keep your integrity and prepare for renewal.

Hexagram 23 in love and relationships

In love, Hexagram 23 points to a relationship under strain from slow erosion: small disrespects, growing distance, outside pressure, gossip or the steady wear of unresolved issues. It is generally not the time for dramatic moves such as ultimatums, sudden commitments or forced confrontations. If you are in a relationship, focus on the foundation, the legs of the bed: basic kindness, reliability and respect. If you are single or newly dating, this is a better time to rest, recover and protect your energy than to chase romance or rush a commitment, since a connection that starts now may be built on unstable ground. Line three suggests that distancing yourself from people who undermine you is right, even if it feels uncomfortable. For reconciliation, the answer is not now; let the destructive phase pass first. The large fruit left uneaten in the top line hints that something worthwhile can survive and grow again later.

Hexagram 23 for career and money

For career questions, Bo can indicate instability: restructuring, budget cuts, office politics, someone undermining your position, or a project quietly losing support. The advice is not to launch, expand or confront anyone head-on. Keep a low profile, do your work well, protect your core responsibilities and strengthen your relationships with the people around you, as the image recommends. If the environment is truly corrosive, line three supports separating yourself from it, discreetly and without drama. With money, this is a time for caution and conservation rather than risk, and for reinforcing your basic security. Students may do best by consolidating fundamentals rather than taking on ambitious new challenges. Remember that the decline is temporary; what you preserve now becomes the seed of your next opportunity.

What Hexagram 23 advises now

Hold still and protect what is essential. Strengthen your foundations, be generous to those who support you and preserve your integrity, the large fruit that can seed the next cycle. Avoid bold initiatives, open confrontations, desperate attempts to save everything, and any compromise of your values just to get through. Separating from harmful influences is fine; fighting them head-on now is not. If your question was yes or no, Bo means not now: the timing does not favor moving forward. Wait for the turn; the next hexagram, Return, shows decline giving way to renewal. This is a tendency, not a fixed fate.

Changing lines of Hexagram 23

  1. Line 1 · 初六

    剝床以足,蔑貞凶。

    象曰:剝床以足,以滅下也。

The first line shows the bed split at the legs: the erosion starts at the foundation, and what is upright is being pushed aside, which points toward misfortune. Pay attention to early warning signs, such as small breaches of trust or neglected basics, and reinforce your foundation before the damage spreads.

  2. Line 2 · 六二

    剝床以辨,蔑貞凶。

    象曰:剝床以辨,未有與也。

The second line shows the bed split at the frame. The damage is moving closer, you may feel isolated and without allies, and misfortune is near. Be cautious, avoid exposing yourself and look for support; this is not the moment to stand alone against the tide.

  3. Line 3 · 六三

    剝之,无咎。

    象曰:剝之无咎,失上下也。

The third line splits away from the others, and there is no fault. Here a yielding line breaks with its destructive peers to side with the strong line above. You may need to separate from a group or habit that is causing harm, even at some cost, and doing so is right.

  4. Line 4 · 六四

    剝床以膚,凶。

    象曰:剝床以膚,切近災也。

The fourth line shows the bed split all the way to the skin: the danger now reaches you personally, and misfortune is at hand. This is the low point of the cycle. Protect what is essential, avoid rash moves and endure; the turn is closer than it feels.

  5. Line 5 · 六五

    貫魚,以宮人寵,无不利。

    象曰:以宮人寵,終无尤也。

The fifth line is fish threaded on a string, with favor won through the ladies of the palace, and nothing is unfavorable. The yielding lines fall into good order to approach the strong line, as court ladies once came before their ruler in turn, so chaos becomes order and opposition becomes cooperation. Organize, work with the strongest positive force available and let the situation improve.

  6. Line 6 · 上九

    碩果不食,君子得輿,小人剝廬。

    象曰:君子得輿,民所載也。小人剝廬,終不可用也。

The top line is a large fruit left uneaten: the noble person receives a carriage, while the petty person tears down his own hut. The seed of renewal survives, and integrity ends up carried by the support of others, while destructive behavior wrecks its own shelter. Protect your core values, because they are what will grow again.

Hexagram 23: common questions

Is Hexagram 23 a bad sign?

It is one of the more difficult hexagrams, because it describes erosion and decline. It is not a sentence of doom, though: it advises patience and protection, and it is followed directly by Hexagram 24, Return. What you preserve now becomes the seed of what comes next.

What does Hexagram 23 mean in love?

It suggests a relationship being worn down by small hurts, distance or outside pressure. Avoid dramatic moves and focus on basic kindness and respect, or on protecting your own energy if you are single. Reconciliation is better attempted later, once the difficult phase has passed.

What does Hexagram 23 mean in a yes or no question?

It generally means not now. The judgment says it is not favorable to go anywhere, so pushing forward is likely to backfire. Wait, protect your position and ask again once circumstances have shifted.

What if line 6 of Hexagram 23 is changing?

The top line is the large fruit that is not eaten, the seed of renewal that survives the decline. When it is the changing line, Bo becomes Hexagram 2, Kun (The Receptive), which counsels patience, support and quiet strength. Integrity kept through hard times tends to be carried forward by others.
