The original text of Hexagram 24

The judgment

The judgment promises success and describes an easy, natural rhythm: going out and coming in without harm, friends arriving without fault, the way turning back on itself, and the return arriving on the seventh day. It closes by saying it is favorable to have somewhere to go. The seven days suggest a cycle that completes itself, so the return does not have to be forced, only welcomed. As energy comes back, so do companions, and movement becomes possible again.

The image

Thunder lies within the earth: the first stirring of new life, still hidden underground. At the winter solstice the ancient kings closed the border passes, merchants and travelers stayed home, and the ruler did not tour the provinces. The image asks you to protect a fragile new beginning with rest and quiet. Do not exhaust the returning energy by rushing about; let it gather strength first.

Hexagram 24 meaning

The meaning of Hexagram 24 is the return of light after darkness. A single strong line has come back at the very bottom, beneath five yielding lines. After the erosion of Splitting Apart, where only one strong line clung to the top, the cycle has turned and the light that seemed lost reappears from below. Fu means to return, to come back, to restore and to begin again.

In the old calendar of waxing and waning hexagrams, Fu belongs to the eleventh month, the month of the winter solstice. It is the darkest time of the year, yet from that day on the light begins to grow. That is the spirit of this hexagram: the turn has already happened, even if the world outside still looks wintry. The new energy is real but young, and it needs protection more than pressure.

The trigrams describe the same moment. Below is Zhen, Thunder, the trigram of movement and awakening; above is Kun, the Earth, the trigram of receptivity and devotion. Movement that goes along with the natural course meets no resistance. Nothing has to be forced: the return happens on its own schedule, friends gather, and going out and coming back is free of harm.

Fu is also about returning to yourself, to the right path and to your best values after straying. The lines are a study in different ways of coming back: quickly and cleanly, gracefully by following a good example, repeatedly and unsteadily, alone against the crowd, sincerely after self-examination, or not at all. The earlier and more honestly you return, the better it goes, while missing the turn altogether, as the top line warns, has long-lasting consequences.

Hexagram 24 in love and relationships

In love, Hexagram 24 is the classic sign of return: renewed feelings, a reconnection, a fresh start after a difficult period, or a relationship coming back to its original warmth. If you are hoping an ex will come back, this hexagram allows for renewed contact, but it advises patience and natural timing rather than pressure; the return comes on the seventh day, not on demand. Ask yourself too whether the real return is to a person or to your own center. If you are single, it often marks the end of a lonely or closed-off phase as your openness comes back. If you are dating someone new, let trust build at its own pace; small, steady steps suit this hexagram better than big declarations. In a relationship, it favors returning to basics, to the rituals and kindness of the early days. The third line warns against an on-and-off pattern that keeps repeating, and the top line warns against missing the moment to reconcile out of pride. The outlook leans favorable, step by step.

Hexagram 24 for career and money

In career matters, Fu signals recovery and renewal: business picking up after a slow period, returning to a former employer or field, reviving a shelved project, or getting back on track after a mistake. Start small and let momentum build; the image of resting at the solstice warns against overcommitting while the new energy is still fragile. The judgment's promise that friends arrive without fault suggests reconnecting with former colleagues, clients or partners. If you have made an error, the first line says to correct it quickly, before you have gone far, which brings the best outcome. With money, the trend is toward gradual improvement, best supported by steady, sensible steps rather than an attempt to recover everything at once. Students may benefit from returning to fundamentals or resuming studies they had set aside.

What Hexagram 24 advises now

Welcome the turn. Correct mistakes quickly, return to what is right and healthy for you, and give the new beginning time and rest to grow. Reconnect with friends and allies, and move in step with the natural rhythm instead of forcing results. Avoid rushing, overextending, repeating the same mistake and, above all, ignoring the chance to turn back. If your question was yes or no, Fu leans yes, but gradually: the answer is favorable, and its fruits arrive step by step. This is a tendency, not a guarantee.

Changing lines of Hexagram 24

  1. Line 1 ·

The first line returns from a short distance, without great regret, and this brings supreme good fortune. You notice the wrong turn early and come back before any real harm is done. Correct course immediately; small, prompt corrections are the best kind.

  2. Line 2 ·

The second line is a quiet, graceful return, and it brings good fortune. You come back to the right path by following the good example of someone close to you. Humility and a willingness to learn from others make this return easy and beautiful.

  3. Line 3 ·

The third line returns again and again: there is danger, but no fault. You keep straying and coming back, which is unsettling and risky. Returning each time is still better than not returning at all, but try to recognize the pattern and make your next return the last.

  4. Line 4 ·

The fourth line walks in the middle of the group yet returns alone. You turn back toward what is right even though the people around you do not. It can feel lonely, but it is the correct choice, so follow your inner compass rather than the crowd.

  5. Line 5 ·

The fifth line is a sincere, wholehearted return, without regret. You examine yourself honestly and come back fully, without excuses. Owning your mistakes in this generous way leaves nothing to regret.

  6. Line 6 ·

The top line misses the return, which warns of misfortune and of trouble from both outside and within; armies sent out now would end in great defeat that reaches even the ruler, and for ten years no new campaign would be possible. This is a strong warning against stubbornly ignoring the turning point. Do not escalate; realign now, and accept that recovery will take time.

Hexagram 24: common questions

Does Hexagram 24 mean an ex will come back?

It is the hexagram of return, so it can point to renewed contact, rekindled feelings or a second chance. It does not guarantee that a specific person will come back, and it advises natural timing rather than pressure. Sometimes the most important return is to your own center.

What does Hexagram 24 mean in a yes or no question?

It leans yes, gradually. The turning point has come and conditions are improving, but the new energy is still young. Move forward step by step instead of all at once.

What does “seven days” mean in Hexagram 24?

The seven days describe a natural cycle that completes itself. Traditionally the number is linked to the seven stages through which the light withdraws and then comes back. In practice, it means the return will arrive in its own time, and you do not need to force it.

What if line 6 of Hexagram 24 is changing?

The top line warns of missing the return through confusion or stubbornness, with long-lasting consequences. When it is the changing line, Fu becomes Hexagram 27, Yi (Nourishment), a hint to stop pushing outward and attend to what truly nourishes you. Realign quietly and be patient with recovery.
