Hexagram 22: Bi, Grace

Hexagram 22: Bi, Grace

Hexagram 22, Bi (Grace), is about beauty, form and presentation, and about keeping them in their proper place. Grace brightens life and smooths everyday matters, but lasting value comes from substance, and the highest beauty is simplicity.

The original text of Hexagram 22

The judgment

山火賁:亨。小利有攸往。

The judgment grants success but adds that only small undertakings are favored. Grace, charm and good presentation help things go smoothly: a pleasant meeting, a well-designed product, a kind gesture at the right moment. They are not enough, however, to carry a major venture or a serious decision. Enjoy and use beauty, but do not ask it to do the work that only substance can do.

The image

山下有火,賁;君子以明庶政,无敢折獄。

Fire burns at the foot of the mountain, lighting its slopes with a warm glow in the dark. In the same spirit, the noble person brings clarity to everyday affairs but does not dare to settle serious cases on that basis. Firelight is lovely and reveals shapes, but it neither reaches far nor goes deep. The image asks you to use grace and good form for routine matters while relying on deeper inquiry for the decisions that truly count.

Hexagram 22 meaning

The meaning of Hexagram 22 centers on adornment: the form, beauty and style that give life its texture. After the decisive work of the previous hexagram, Biting Through, things that have come together are now given shape and polish. Manners, rituals, design, appearance and presentation all belong here. They are not superficial in a negative sense; they are how inner qualities become visible and how people relate gracefully to one another.

The trigrams show both the beauty and its limits. Below is Li, Fire, the trigram of light and clarity; above is Gen, the Mountain, the trigram of stillness. Fire at the foot of the mountain lights it up beautifully, but only on the surface and only nearby. Inner brightness and outer calm make for elegance, yet the light does not penetrate the rock, which is why the judgment limits success to small matters.

The lines alternate between strong and yielding, decorating one another the way pattern and background do in a fine fabric. In the lower trigram a yielding line comes to adorn the strong ones; in the upper trigram a strong line adorns the yielding ones. The story of the lines runs from adorning the feet at the start to plain white at the top. Ornament peaks in the middle and then gives way to simplicity, as if beauty itself learns that less is more.

The order of the hexagrams makes a further point: Bi is followed by Bo, Splitting Apart. When decoration goes too far and form replaces substance, things begin to crumble. Grace is a gift, but only when it serves something real. This hexagram asks you to make life and work more beautiful while keeping your attention on what lies beneath the surface.

Hexagram 22 in love and relationships

In love, Hexagram 22 is a charming, romantic sign. It favors courtship, attraction, lovely dates, small gestures and the pleasure of presenting yourself well. If you are single, polish how you show up but stay authentic; the first line suggests walking on your own feet rather than riding in a carriage you have not earned. If you are dating, enjoy the romance while quietly checking whether there is real substance beneath the charm, on both sides. The fourth line holds one of the loveliest images in the I Ching: a white horse arriving as if on wings, bringing not a raider but a suitor. A sincere proposal or approach may come in a simple form, and what looked like a threat turns out to be affection. In a committed relationship, add beauty and ritual to everyday life, but do not let the relationship turn into a performance. For reconciliation, modest and sincere gestures, like the small roll of silk in the fifth line, work better than grand displays.

Hexagram 22 for career and money

In career terms, Bi favors presentation, design, branding, marketing, communication and anything that benefits from polish. It is a good time to refine a portfolio, improve a pitch, redesign a product or simply make your work more pleasant to receive. The judgment's limit still applies: for small projects and everyday matters good form is enough, but for major contracts, restructuring or serious disputes, look closely at the substance and do not be swayed by appearances. The image is explicit that elegance is not a basis for judgment. With money, be careful about spending on image or status, and favor modest, real value over impressive display. Students may benefit from improving how they present their work, while remembering that the content is what lasts. A simple, clean approach is often the most persuasive one.

What Hexagram 22 advises now

Add grace to what you do: refine, polish, be courteous and make things beautiful. At the same time, keep checking the substance beneath the surface, and let simplicity guide your choices. Avoid judging people or plans by their looks, making major decisions on the strength of charm or presentation, and spending energy or money on show. If your question was yes or no, Bi leans yes for small, everyday matters and leans wait for large or serious ones, at least until you have looked beyond appearances. Treat this as a tendency rather than a fixed answer.

Changing lines of Hexagram 22

  1. Line 1 · 初九

    賁其趾,舍車而徒。

    象曰:舍車而徒,義弗乘也。

The first line adorns its feet, leaving the carriage behind and walking. This is a modest beginning: you turn down comfort or help you have not earned and go forward on your own strength. There is dignity in this simplicity, so trust your own steps.

  2. Line 2 · 六二

    賁其須。

    象曰:賁其須,與上興也。

The second line adorns the beard. A beard moves only with the chin, so this ornament depends entirely on what supports it; form is following substance. Attach yourself to something real and worthwhile, and let style take care of itself.

  3. Line 3 · 九三

    賁如濡如,永貞吉。

    象曰:永貞之吉,終莫之陵也。

The third line is adorned and glistening, and lasting steadiness brings good fortune. Life is pleasant, charming and full, perhaps a little too comfortable. Enjoy it, but do not sink into it; stay steady and keep your character intact.

  4. Line 4 · 六四

    賁如皤如,白馬翰如,匪寇婚媾。

    象曰:六四,當位疑也。匪寇婚媾,終无尤也。

The fourth line hesitates between ornament and plain white, and then a white horse comes as if on wings, not a robber but a suitor. You are choosing between decoration and simplicity, and simplicity is right. An approach that seemed threatening proves sincere, so let suspicion go and respond to the honest offer.

  5. Line 5 · 六五

    賁於丘園,束帛戔戔,吝,終吉。

    象曰:六五之吉,有喜也。

The fifth line seeks grace in the hills and gardens with only a small roll of silk to give. The gift looks meager and there may be some embarrassment, but it ends in good fortune. Sincerity matters more than display: turn toward simple, genuine people and places, and offer what you truly can.

  6. Line 6 · 上九

    白賁,无咎。

    象曰:白賁无咎,上得志也。

The top line is plain white grace, without fault. At its highest stage, beauty becomes simplicity: no ornament, only essence. Strip things back, let your true quality show, and trust that the unadorned version of you or your work is enough.

Hexagram 22: common questions

Is Hexagram 22 good for love?

Yes, it is one of the more romantic hexagrams, linked to attraction, courtship and charm. The fourth line even speaks of a suitor arriving on a white horse. Just make sure the beauty rests on real substance, and value sincere, simple gestures.

What does Hexagram 22 mean in a yes or no question?

It leans yes for small or everyday matters. For major decisions it suggests waiting until you have looked past appearances and checked the substance. Grace helps, but it should not be the deciding factor.

Why does Hexagram 22 favor only small matters?

Because grace works on the surface. Good form makes routine affairs run smoothly, but big undertakings and serious judgments require depth, evidence and commitment. The image of firelight at the foot of a mountain shows a beauty that is real but limited in reach.

What if line 4 of Hexagram 22 is changing?

Line four chooses simplicity over ornament and sees a white horse arrive, bringing not a robber but a suitor, so doubts about someone's intentions may clear up. When it is the changing line, Bi becomes Hexagram 30, Li (The Clinging), which emphasizes clarity and sincere attachment. Respond openly to an honest approach.
