The original text of Hexagram 5

The judgment

The judgment says that if you hold sincerity and inner confidence, the outcome will be bright and successful, that steadiness leads to good fortune, and that it is favorable to cross the great river. In other words, waiting is not the same as giving up or drifting; it is a strong, deliberate stance taken by someone who knows the goal is worth it. The river crossing points to an important undertaking ahead, a step that will be possible and favorable once the timing is right. Until then, your task is to stay truthful with yourself about the situation, neither fooling yourself nor losing heart.

The image

The Great Image shows clouds rising up into the sky: rain is gathering, but nothing can make it fall sooner. The noble person's response is to share meals, enjoy good company and stay lighthearted. It asks you to look after yourself, appreciate what is good in the present and stay at ease, instead of wearing yourself out with worry about something you cannot hurry.

Hexagram 5 meaning

Hexagram 5 in the I Ching, Xu or Waiting, describes a situation in which something important is on its way but cannot be forced. The lower trigram is Heaven, strength and the drive to move forward; the upper trigram is Water, danger and uncertainty. Strength meets danger ahead, and the wise response is not to charge into it but to wait with composure until the way opens. The character for this hexagram also carries the sense of need, and tradition links it with food and drink, a hint that waiting well includes taking care of what you need.

Waiting in this sense is active and confident. The three strong lines below show that you have resources, ability and energy; what is missing is the right moment. People often misread delay as rejection, or fill the waiting time with anxious moves that make things worse. Xu teaches that patience rooted in sincerity is itself a form of strength, and that those who can stay steady under pressure are the ones who cross the river safely when the time comes.

The six lines trace a journey toward the water: from waiting in a distant meadow, to waiting on the sand, then in the mud, then in a place of bloodshed, then at a table of food and wine, and finally inside the pit itself, where unexpected guests arrive. Each stage asks for a slightly different response, from simply keeping your routine to staying calm in the middle of trouble and welcoming help you did not ask for.

When Xu appears, the message is usually not no, but not yet. Keep preparing, look after your energy and morale, stay truthful about the facts and trust that the rain will come in its own time. When the moment for action arrives, it will be clear.

Hexagram 5 in love and relationships

In love, Hexagram 5 asks for patience and trust, and it often appears when you are waiting for something: a message, a decision, a commitment or a reunion. If you are single, it suggests that the right connection is not something you can force into being, and that living fully and staying open will serve you better than searching anxiously. If you are dating, let the relationship reveal itself at its own pace and resist pushing for labels or promises before they come naturally. For couples, Xu can describe a period of waiting together, such as distance, a pending move, plans that depend on circumstances or one partner going through a demanding time; the Great Image suggests sharing meals, simple pleasures and good humor to keep the bond warm. For reconciliation, this hexagram usually counsels giving space rather than chasing, since pressure now tends to push the other person further away. Sincerity is the key word: if your feelings are genuine and you stay steady, the waiting is far more likely to lead somewhere good.

Hexagram 5 for career and money

For career, study and money, Xu often describes a waiting period: for a job offer, an application result, a promotion, funding, an approval or the right moment in the market. The advice is to use the time well, by sharpening your skills, preparing documents, building relationships and keeping your routine, rather than sending repeated follow-ups or making impulsive changes out of frustration. In your studies, results and progress may come later than hoped, but steady preparation now will pay off. With money, Xu advises against risky moves made out of impatience and favors keeping things stable until conditions are clearer. When the opportunity does arrive, the judgment's mention of crossing the great river suggests you should be ready to act decisively.

What Hexagram 5 advises now

Now is the time to wait with confidence, prepare quietly and look after yourself. Keep your daily routine, stay honest about the facts and enjoy what you can in the present. Avoid forcing things, moving into an exposed position too early, worrying yourself into exhaustion or reacting to every rumor. If you asked a yes or no question, Xu usually means yes, but not yet: the tendency is favorable, but the timing is not in your hands, so expect a delay rather than a refusal. When the moment comes, be ready to move.

Changing lines of Hexagram 5

  1. Line 1 ·

The first line is waiting in the meadow on the outskirts, far from the river, where it helps to stay constant. As a changing line, it says the danger or decision is still far away, so there is no reason to act as if it had already arrived. Keep your normal routine, conserve your energy and do not let vague anxiety push you into premature moves.

  2. Line 2 ·

The second line is waiting on the sand, closer to the water, where there is some idle talk or criticism but things end well. When this line changes, you may hear disapproving comments or run into small misunderstandings as the situation draws nearer. Stay calm and generous, do not get drawn into arguments, and trust that the outcome will justify your patience.

  3. Line 3 ·

The third line is waiting in the mud, a position that draws raiders toward you. As a changing line, it warns that you may have moved too early into a vulnerable spot, and your exposure is inviting trouble. Be careful, alert and serious; take sensible precautions and do not make things worse by pushing further forward.

  4. Line 4 ·

The fourth line is waiting where blood has been spilled, with the way out leading up from the pit. When this line changes, you are in the middle of a difficult or dangerous moment in which struggling harder would only entangle you more. Keep still, stay composed and let events take their course; by yielding rather than fighting, you will find your way out.

  5. Line 5 ·

The fifth line is waiting with wine and food, and holding steady brings good fortune. As a changing line, it describes a pause in the difficulties, a moment of rest and comfort that should be enjoyed. Recharge and share the good things you have, but keep your goal in sight, since the task is not finished yet.

  6. Line 6 ·

The top line falls into the pit, and then three uninvited guests arrive; if you treat them with respect, things end well. When this line changes, it may feel as if waiting has failed and you are stuck, but help or opportunity is arriving from an unexpected direction. Welcome the surprise with courtesy and an open mind, even if it does not look like what you expected.
