The original text of Hexagram 40

The judgment

雷水解:利西南,无所往,其來復吉。有攸往,夙吉。

The judgment says the southwest is favorable, the direction of open ground and of people. If there is nowhere further to go, coming back to an ordinary, settled life brings good fortune; if something still needs to be done, doing it early brings good fortune. In other words, once the difficulty has passed, don't create new complications or dwell on what happened. Settle back into normal life, and finish any remaining business promptly instead of letting it linger.

The image

雷雨作,解;君子以赦過宥罪。

Thunder and rain arrive together, breaking the heaviness in the air and waking the land. The wise person responds in the same spirit, excusing honest errors and showing leniency toward wrongdoing. This image asks you to let go of grudges and lighten your judgment of others, because a release that leaves no room for forgiveness is only half complete.

Hexagram 40 meaning

Hexagram 40 Jie (Deliverance) describes the release that follows a time of hardship. Its lower trigram is Kan, water and danger, and its upper trigram is Zhen, thunder and movement: movement that carries you out of danger. The image is a spring storm, when thunder and rain break the oppressive tension and the ground begins to sprout. After the steep climb of Obstruction, the knots begin to come undone.

Relief brings its own lessons. The judgment advises returning to normal life quickly rather than prolonging the drama, and acting early on any remaining business. The first line simply says there is no mistake: rest, recover and let the release do its work. Later lines warn against dangers that often appear after a breakthrough, such as clinging to unhealthy dependencies, showing off newfound gains, or leaving one last obstacle in place.

Deliverance also involves clearing out what caused the trouble. The second line catches three foxes, an image of cunning influences or deceptions, and does it with the yellow arrow of fairness and directness. The fourth line frees itself from what has been clinging to it, so that genuine friends can draw near. The fifth line shows that real liberation is an inner decision, and the top line brings down the hawk on the high wall, the final obstacle, with a well-prepared, decisive shot.

Above all, Jie is about letting go. Thunder and rain do not hold on to the storm; they release it. Forgiving mistakes, including your own, simplifying your commitments and returning to an ordinary rhythm are what turn a lucky break into a lasting recovery. In the traditional sequence, Deliverance is followed by Decrease, a reminder that too much ease can lead to loss, so enjoy the relief without letting everything go slack.

Hexagram 40 in love and relationships

In love, Hexagram 40 often signals relief after a tense period: an argument finally resolved, a misunderstanding cleared, or a long-distance or stressful phase coming to an end. Its strongest message is forgiveness, letting go of old grievances and not reopening issues that have already been settled, because lingering resentment would undo the release. For couples, this is a good time to make up, reset expectations and return to simple, everyday affection. For singles, it may mean finally being free of a past relationship or a repeating pattern, and being ready to meet people with a lighter heart; the fourth line suggests letting go of attachments that hold you back so that the right people can come closer. If you are hoping for reconciliation, the hexagram is fairly encouraging when both sides are willing to forgive, and it advises acting early rather than waiting until the moment passes. Sometimes deliverance means release from a relationship that has run its course, and that, too, can bring relief.

Hexagram 40 for career and money

For career, Deliverance often marks the end of a stressful phase: a project delivered, a crisis resolved, a difficult situation finally behind you, or a burden lifted. Use the moment to clear backlogs, settle loose ends promptly, and return to a sustainable rhythm instead of jumping straight into the next emergency. Forgiving colleagues' mistakes and moving on can strengthen a team. The third line warns against showing off a new title or windfall, which tends to attract envy and trouble, while the fourth advises dropping associations or habits that drag you down. Students may feel a weight lift after exams or a difficult course. Financially, it can describe relief after strain, best used to stabilize and simplify rather than to take on new burdens.

What Hexagram 40 advises now

Let the release happen. Forgive what can be forgiven, simplify your life, and return to a normal, steady routine. If something still needs to be resolved, act promptly and decisively rather than letting it drag on. Avoid holding grudges, reopening old fights, flaunting your success, and clinging to people or habits that kept you stuck. If your question was yes or no, Hexagram 40 leans toward yes, especially when you are ready to act soon, since the judgment favors early action. Like every reading, it shows a tendency rather than a guarantee, but it is one of the most hopeful signs that a difficult chapter is ending.
