The original text of Hexagram 39
The judgment
水山蹇:利西南,不利東北;利見大人,貞吉。
The judgment says that the southwest is favorable and the northeast is not, that it helps to see a great person, and that steadfastness brings good fortune. In the traditional arrangement of the trigrams, the southwest is the direction of open, level ground and of friends, while the northeast is the direction of the mountain, steep and blocking. Go where the going is easier and where support can be found, rather than climbing straight into the hardest terrain. Seek out someone wise or experienced, and hold to what is right while you wait for the obstacle to yield.
The image
山上有水,蹇;君子以反身修德。
Water lies on top of the mountain, a hard, precarious climb with danger at the summit. Faced with this kind of obstruction, the wise person looks inward, asks what in their own conduct needs correcting, and strengthens their character. This image asks you to treat the blockage as a mirror: before blaming the obstacle, see what in your approach, attitude or preparation needs to change.
Hexagram 39 meaning
Hexagram 39 Jian (Obstruction) is the hexagram of difficult terrain. Its lower trigram is Gen, the mountain, and its upper trigram is Kan, water or the abyss, so you face a steep climb with danger in front of you. The character itself is often explained as a person who limps or struggles to walk, an image of progress that is slow and painful. This hexagram appears when plans stall, doors close, or every step forward seems to meet resistance.
The lines of Jian repeat a striking pattern: going forward meets obstruction, while coming back brings praise, a homecoming, alliances or great results. The lesson is that this is not a time to keep pushing straight ahead. Pausing, turning back, regrouping with others and getting wise counsel are the moves that actually work. The two exceptions are the loyal servant of the second line, who must face hardship for the sake of duty and is not to blame for it, and the leader of the fifth line, who stands in the thick of the trouble and draws friends to their side.
Obstruction also asks for honest self-examination. Water on the mountain may simply be a fact of the landscape, but how you respond to it is in your hands. Are you trying to force a path that was never yours? Are you working alone when you need allies? Do you need more skill, patience or clarity before you try again? Turning inward is not giving up; it is gathering the strength and insight needed to get past the obstacle.
One of the hopeful truths of this hexagram is that when you stay steady in the center of a hard situation, help tends to gather around you. In the traditional sequence, Obstruction is followed by Hexagram 40, Deliverance, because no obstacle lasts forever. The work now is to wait wisely, prepare well and move with others rather than against the mountain.
Hexagram 39 in love and relationships
In love, Hexagram 39 points to obstacles: distance, timing, family resistance, a partner who is not ready, or patterns in yourself that keep repeating. Pushing harder against the obstacle, by pleading, pressuring or forcing a decision, will usually make it worse. Instead, step back and look at your own part, ask what you need to change, and seek the support of trusted friends or a wise outside perspective. For singles, this can mean pausing a frustrating search or a one-sided pursuit and focusing on becoming the person you want to be in a relationship. For couples, it suggests tackling the problem together rather than blaming each other, since the lines favor coming back and connecting over going it alone. Reconciliation is not ruled out, but it is unlikely to happen through direct pressure now; real change on your side and patience with timing are what open the way.
Hexagram 39 for career and money
For career and study, Jian describes stalled projects, rejections, bureaucratic delays or a role in which every effort meets resistance. It is a time to reassess rather than to push harder. Look for an easier, more realistic route to your goal, the southwest of the judgment, and ask for advice from a mentor, a manager you trust or someone with more experience. Build alliances before you try again, as the fourth line suggests, and use the delay to improve your skills or rethink your strategy. Financially, the hexagram favors caution and patience; it is not a time for big new commitments while the way is blocked.
What Hexagram 39 advises now
Stop pushing against the wall. Pause, look honestly at your own approach, ask for help, and take the easier route where one exists. Gather allies, strengthen your skills, and wait for the right moment to move again. Avoid forcing your way through, blaming others for the obstacle, isolating yourself, and giving up on your goal altogether. If your question was yes or no, Hexagram 39 usually leans toward wait or not now; if the question is about asking for help, returning to a base or regrouping, it leans toward yes. This is a tendency rather than a fixed outcome, and obstruction is a phase, not a permanent state.
Changing lines of Hexagram 39
Line 1 · 初六
往蹇,來譽。
象曰:往蹇來譽,宜待也。
Pushing ahead meets obstruction, turning back earns praise: going forward now leads straight into difficulty. Wait, observe and choose your moment. You will be respected later for having the patience to hold back.
Line 2 · 六二
王臣蹇蹇,匪躬之故。
象曰:王臣蹇蹇,終无尤也。
The royal servant struggling through hardship after hardship: you face these difficulties because duty or responsibility demands it, not out of self-interest or personal failure. Meet them directly and with integrity. No blame attaches to you for struggling with something you did not create.
Line 3 · 九三
往蹇來反。
象曰:往蹇來反,內喜之也。
Forward is blocked, so you turn back home: return to your base, your people and what you know. Those who depend on you will welcome your return. Strengthen your home ground before trying to advance again.
Line 4 · 六四
往蹇來連。
象曰:往蹇來連,當位實也。
Forward is blocked, but coming back unites you with others: going alone will not work. Connect with allies and build the support you need before you move. Together you will have the strength that you lack on your own.
Line 5 · 九五
大蹇朋來。
象曰:大蹇朋來,以中節也。
Friends arrive in the thick of great difficulty: you are at the center of a serious problem, but you are not alone. Stay steady and committed, and help will gather around you. Accept that support and organize it well.
Line 6 · 上六
往蹇來碩,吉;利見大人。
象曰:往蹇來碩,志在內也。利見大人,以從貴也。
Forward is blocked, but coming back brings something great: even if you could walk away, your experience is needed. Return, engage, and work alongside a capable leader or mentor. Good fortune comes from contributing rather than withdrawing.
Hexagram 39: common questions
Is hexagram 39 a bad omen?
It describes obstacles, but not a hopeless situation. The judgment still ends with good fortune for those who stay steady, seek help and take the easier route. It is a sign to change your approach, not a sign of failure.
What does hexagram 39 mean in love?
It points to obstacles such as distance, timing or resistance from others or from within. Instead of pushing, step back, look at your own part, and seek support. Patience and genuine change tend to open the way.
What does hexagram 39 mean in a yes or no question?
It usually leans toward wait or not now. If your question is about asking for help, regrouping or returning to something solid, it leans toward yes. Pushing straight ahead is what this hexagram advises against.
What does the southwest mean in hexagram 39?
In the traditional arrangement of the trigrams, the southwest belongs to the earth, which is open and level, while the northeast belongs to the mountain, which is steep and blocking. In practice it means choosing the easier, better-supported route instead of the hardest climb. It is a metaphor for strategy rather than a literal compass direction.
What if all six lines of hexagram 39 are changing?
When every line changes, Obstruction becomes Hexagram 38, Opposition. This hints that the remaining difficulty lies in differences between people, and that respecting those differences, rather than overcoming the obstacle by force, is the way through.
