Hexagram 36: Ming Yi, Darkening of the Light
The meaning of Hexagram 36, Ming Yi (Darkening of the Light), is endurance with integrity at a time when your light is wounded or unwelcome, like the sun sinking below the earth. Keep your clarity alive inside, show less of it outside, and wait for conditions to change.

The original text of Hexagram 36
The judgment
The judgment says only that it is favorable to remain steadfast in hardship. This acknowledges that the situation is genuinely difficult, often because those in power, or the circumstances themselves, are hostile to openness and honesty. You are not asked to pretend things are fine, nor to give up your values; you are asked to hold on to them quietly. Steadfastness here means persistence without display, protecting what is good in you until it can safely be seen again.
The image
The light has gone down into the earth, the way the sun disappears at dusk while still burning beneath the horizon. When the wise person must deal with many people in such times, they deliberately dim their brilliance and do not expose every fault they notice, yet they stay clear-sighted inside. This image asks for discretion, not dishonesty: use your understanding quietly, and let your clarity guide your actions rather than your announcements.
Hexagram 36 meaning
Hexagram 36 Ming Yi (Darkening of the Light) pictures the sun sinking into the earth. Its lower trigram is Li, fire and brightness, and its upper trigram is Kun, the earth, so light is buried beneath darkness. The name joins brightness with the idea of being wounded or brought low. This hexagram describes situations in which clarity, honesty or talent is not welcome: a harsh environment, an unfair authority, a period of personal loss, or a stretch when nothing you do seems to be recognized.
The top line, a broken line at the summit, represents the darkening power itself, someone who has risen high but has no light of their own. The lines below show the ways good people respond to such a force, depending on how close to it they stand. One leaves early, one is wounded but rescued, one confronts the source of the darkness, one sees its heart and slips away, and one, closest of all, cannot leave and must hide their light to survive. The fifth line names Jizi, a nobleman at a tyrant's court who protected himself by concealing his wisdom while never abandoning it.
The central teaching is to keep the inner light alive while dimming the outer one. Fire within and earth without means bright understanding inside and a modest, unprovocative surface. This is not deception for its own sake; it is a refusal to throw your best qualities into a situation that will only punish them. Discretion, patience and quiet perseverance are forms of strength here, and so is knowing when to leave.
Ming Yi also carries real hope. The sun that sets is not destroyed, and the top line shows that a power built on darkness climbs to heaven only to fall into the earth. Hard seasons end. In the traditional sequence, this hexagram is followed by Hexagram 37, The Family: after being wounded in the outside world, a person returns home to heal, a reminder to lean on the people and places where you feel safe.
Hexagram 36 in love and relationships
In love, Hexagram 36 often points to a difficult or hidden period. A relationship may be under pressure from outside, such as family disapproval, distance or stress, or feelings may be kept hidden because it does not feel safe to show them. If you are in a relationship where you feel diminished, constantly criticized or unable to be yourself, take that seriously; the first line favors leaving early, even at a cost, rather than waiting for things to get worse, and reaching out to people you trust can help. For singles, this is usually a time to protect your heart, recover from past hurts, and be discreet about new connections until you know whom you can trust. For couples going through a hard patch together, the hexagram counsels patience, privacy and quiet loyalty: shield what is good between you instead of exposing it to criticism. Reconciliation is generally not favored right now; conditions are clouded, and it is wiser to rebuild your own clarity first.
Hexagram 36 for career and money
At work, Ming Yi often appears under a difficult boss, in a toxic team, or in an organization that does not reward honesty or talent. The advice is not to fight the darkness head-on, but to keep your integrity, do solid work, avoid broadcasting your plans or criticisms, and protect your energy. If you see clearly that the environment will not change, the fourth line suggests quietly preparing to leave rather than staying to be worn down. Students may find this a discouraging period in which their efforts go unrecognized; persistence matters more than results right now. Financially, it is a time for prudence and a low profile rather than expansion. Remember that the hexagram promises a return of light: this is a season to endure, not a permanent state.
What Hexagram 36 advises now
Protect your light: keep your values, your clarity and your sense of who you are, but show them selectively. Be patient, stay discreet, rely on people you trust, and quietly prepare for better conditions or for a well-timed exit. Avoid open confrontation with those who hold power over you, oversharing your plans, compromising your integrity to fit in, and sliding into despair. If your question was yes or no, Hexagram 36 usually leans toward not now or wait, because conditions do not support open action. Treat it as a tendency rather than a final answer: the light is hidden, not gone, and timing can shift.
Changing lines of Hexagram 36
Line 1 ·
The wounded bird lowers its wings in flight: you sense danger early and decide to leave. The journey may cost you comfort, even a few days of going hungry, and the people you leave behind may criticize or misunderstand you. Go anyway, because getting out early is far easier than getting out late.
Line 2 ·
Wounded in the left thigh, saved by a strong horse: you are hurt, but not so badly that you can't act. Get strong help quickly, and use the strength you still have to help others who are affected. Swift, practical rescue brings good fortune.
Line 3 ·
The southern hunt catches the great chief: you have a chance to confront the source of the darkness itself. Even so, don't expect everything to be put right at once, because long-standing problems change slowly. Deal with the root, then be patient with the rest.
Line 4 ·
Entering the left side of the belly: you come close enough to grasp the real heart of the problem. Once you understand what is truly going on, don't linger. Use that knowledge to slip out through the gate while the way is still open.
Line 5 ·
Jizi's way through the darkness: you are too close to the trouble to leave, so you hide your brilliance to stay safe. Keep your inner integrity firm while showing a modest face to the world. Steadfastness in this quiet form is favored and protects what matters most.
Line 6 ·
Darkness instead of light: the one who first rose to the sky ends by sinking into the ground. This line describes darkness reaching its peak and then consuming itself. If you are dealing with such a power, hold on, because its fall is part of the pattern; if you hold power yourself, make sure you are not the one dimming other people's light.
