The original text of Hexagram 8
The judgment
The judgment opens with good fortune, then asks you to look again, more deeply, as if consulting the oracle a second time: do you have the depth, staying power and integrity needed to be a center that others can rely on? If so, there is nothing to regret. People who were restless or unsure begin to arrive and attach themselves, but latecomers, those who hold back until the circle has already formed, fare badly. In modern terms, this hexagram invites you to build or join a community, partnership or alliance, to check honestly whether your motives and character can sustain it, and not to hesitate so long that the moment passes.
The image
The Great Image shows water on the surface of the earth, flowing together into streams and lakes, filling every hollow and joining naturally with other water. The ancient kings, seeing this, founded many states and stayed personally close to the lords who governed them. It asks you to build and maintain your network of relationships, keeping each bond personal and warm, because unity is sustained by genuine connection rather than by command.
Hexagram 8 meaning
Hexagram 8 in the I Ching, Bi or Holding Together, describes union: people coming together around a shared center, purpose or leader. The lower trigram is Earth, the many; the upper trigram is Water, which flows and gathers. Water on the earth naturally seeks other water and fills the low places, an image of bonds that form easily when conditions are right. It is a hexagram of belonging, alliances, partnership and community.
The structure shows a single strong line in the fifth place, the position of the ruler, with five yielding lines gathered around it. That line is the center that holds everything together. Its natural counterpart is Hexagram 7, The Army, which has its single strong line in the second place, leading from within the ranks; in Bi, the strong line sits in the ruler's seat, a leader whom people choose to join. The question is not whether to connect, but with whom, how sincerely and when.
The judgment raises two important points. First, anyone at the center of a group must examine themselves, because people will rely on their consistency and character. Second, timing matters: those who join early become part of the core, while those who hesitate too long may find the circle closed. The lines reinforce this, praising sincerity, inner loyalty and open commitment, while warning about bonding with the wrong people and about drifting with no beginning or leader.
When Bi appears, it is usually a positive sign for relationships of every kind. It asks you to commit to the people and groups that truly share your values, to be the kind of person others can rely on and to act while the opportunity to join is still open. Unity built on sincerity is one of the most dependable sources of good fortune the I Ching describes.
Hexagram 8 in love and relationships
In love, Hexagram 8 is one of the most favorable hexagrams, pointing to union, commitment and a sense of belonging together. If you are single, it encourages you to join communities, groups and social circles where like-minded people gather, because connection is likely to grow out of shared activities and values. If you are dating, it favors moving toward commitment and showing your interest openly, as long as you have chosen someone whose character you trust; the third line warns against attaching yourself to the wrong person. For couples, Bi speaks of deepening loyalty, integrating your lives and becoming each other's steady center, while the image of water on the earth reminds you to keep the connection natural and warm rather than controlling. For reconciliation, it is a hopeful sign if both people are sincere, but the judgment's warning about coming too late is worth heeding: if you want to reconnect, do not wait indefinitely. Above all, choose a bond that rests on genuine affinity rather than loneliness or convenience.
Hexagram 8 for career and money
For career and study, Bi favors teamwork, partnerships, alliances and joining the right organization. It is a good time to network, collaborate, find a mentor or join a project with a strong leader and a clear purpose. If you are the leader, the judgment asks you to examine whether you have the consistency and fairness to keep people united, and the fifth line suggests leading by attraction, letting people join freely rather than pressuring them. Be selective about whom you align with, since the third line warns that the wrong partners can damage your reputation. For students, a study group, an active class community or a learning network can help a great deal. With money, Bi points toward shared projects and cooperation, while advising care in choosing partners and clarity in agreements. Hesitating too long when a good opportunity to join appears may mean missing it entirely.
What Hexagram 8 advises now
Now is the time to connect, commit and contribute to a shared center you believe in. Examine your own motives and reliability, choose your people carefully and act while the door is open. Be sincere, consistent and generous, and let others come to you freely rather than pressing them. Avoid isolation, halfhearted involvement, aligning with people whose values clash with yours and waiting so long that you are left on the outside. If you asked a yes or no question, Bi leans toward yes, particularly for questions about joining, partnering or committing, but treat it as a tendency that depends on sincerity and on not hesitating too long.
Changing lines of Hexagram 8
Line 1 ·
The first line holds to others with sincerity and is free of fault, and when that sincerity fills you the way water fills a plain clay jar, good fortune arrives from an unexpected direction. As a changing line, it says simple, honest goodwill is your best asset, even if you have little else to offer yet. Be genuine and trustworthy from the start, because the connections it brings may come from places you never expected.
Line 2 ·
The second line holds together from within, and steadiness brings good fortune. When this line changes, your bond with a person or group should come from inner conviction, not from flattery or opportunism. Stay true to yourself while you commit, since loyalty that grows out of your own values will last.
Line 3 ·
The third line seeks closeness with people who are not right for you. As a changing line, it warns that you may be getting attached to people who do not share your values or who could pull you away from what matters. Be friendly but careful, and do not let loneliness or convenience push you into a commitment you will regret.
Line 4 ·
The fourth line reaches outward and openly to the leader above, and steadiness brings good fortune. When this line changes, it is right to show your support and loyalty clearly to a person or leader you admire. Make your commitment visible and steady, because openness strengthens the bond.
Line 5 ·
The fifth line is union made visible: the king's hunt drives the animals from three sides only, leaving the front open so that those running ahead can get away, and the townspeople do not need to be put on guard. As a changing line, it says you are the center others gather around, and your influence works best when it is generous and unforced. Let people join freely and let those who want to leave go; trust earned this way holds far better than pressure.
Line 6 ·
The top line is a bond with no head and no beginning, which brings misfortune. When this line changes, you may have missed the right moment to join, or you may be part of a group with no clear leader or starting point. Recognize the gap honestly, and if possible, make a sincere new start rather than drifting on the edge of things.
