The original text of Hexagram 61

The judgment

The judgment speaks of pigs and fishes and calls this good fortune. These were the least responsive of creatures and also the humblest of offerings, so the message is twofold: genuine sincerity can reach anyone, and a modest gift offered with an honest heart counts for more than a lavish one. It is favorable to cross the great river, meaning that significant undertakings succeed best when they rest on trust. Throughout, steadiness in what is right is advised.

The image

The Great Image shows wind blowing over a lake, stirring the water and making its invisible movement visible. In the same way, the wise person deliberates carefully over disputes and is slow to impose harsh, irreversible penalties, looking for the human truth behind each case. It asks you to understand before you condemn, and to leave room for mercy and second chances.

Hexagram 61 meaning

The meaning of Hexagram 61, Zhong Fu, is inner truth: the sincerity at a person's center that others can feel even without words. Its image is wind moving over a lake, unseen yet answered by the whole surface of the water. In the same way, genuine conviction and goodwill travel outward and influence people more deeply than clever arguments or pressure ever could.

The structure of the hexagram reinforces this. Its two yielding lines sit right in the middle, forming an open, empty center, an image of a heart free of prejudice and ready to receive. Around them, the firm second and fifth lines hold the center of each trigram, showing that this openness rests on solid integrity. The whole figure has been compared to an egg and to a hollow wooden boat, both of which carry life safely because they are empty within and strong without.

The lower trigram is Dui, the lake, which stands for joy and openness, and the upper is Xun, the wind, which stands for gentle penetration. Joy below responding to gentleness above creates trust between people. The most famous line of the hexagram, the second, describes a crane calling from the shade and its young answering, a picture of resonance between hearts that needs no display. The fifth line is a person whose sincerity binds others together, while the top line warns about words that soar to the sky with nothing behind them.

Zhong Fu is paired with Hexagram 62, Small Excess, its exact opposite with every line reversed. Where Small Excess counsels caution and modesty, Inner Truth opens the way to wholehearted trust. When this hexagram appears, ask whether your intentions are truly honest, whether you are listening without prejudice and whether your words match what you actually feel and can deliver.

Hexagram 61 in love and relationships

In love, Hexagram 61 is a beautiful sign of trust and emotional honesty. If you are single, being authentic is more likely to attract someone who resonates with who you really are; like the crane in line 2, you do not need to perform for the right person to answer. If you are dating, honest conversation about feelings and intentions deepens the bond more than any tactic, and small sincere gestures matter more than impressive ones. In a committed relationship, Zhong Fu speaks of a bond held together by trust, the fifth line's image of hearts linked firmly together. Two lines add cautions: line 3 warns against letting your mood rise and fall entirely with your partner's, and the top line warns against promises that outrun reality. For reconciliation, sincerity is the key; a heartfelt, honest approach without manipulation has a real chance, while strategy and pressure do not.

Hexagram 61 for career and money

At work, Zhong Fu favors relationships built on trust with clients, colleagues, managers and partners. Honest communication, keeping your word and fair dealing will open doors that persuasion alone cannot. The judgment supports significant ventures, such as a new role, a partnership, a negotiation or an expansion, provided your intentions are sound. If you lead others, listening carefully and judging fairly, as the image advises, will earn their loyalty. In your studies, real understanding beats surface memorization. The main warning comes from the top line: avoid overpromising, hype or claims you cannot back up. With money, transparent agreements and honest dealings are favored, while anything built on exaggeration is not.

What Hexagram 61 advises now

Act from the heart and say what you truly mean. Listen to others without prejudice, give people the benefit of the doubt and judge situations slowly and fairly. Let your sincerity do the work rather than tactics. Avoid hidden agendas, avoid making your stability depend on someone else's moods and avoid promising more than you can deliver. If you asked a yes or no question, Zhong Fu leans toward yes, provided your intentions are honest and your plan is real. If you sense that you are exaggerating or hiding something, the answer leans toward “wait until it is true.”

Changing lines of Hexagram 61

  1. Line 1 ·

Line 1, being prepared and at ease: inner steadiness and self-trust bring good fortune. If you start looking for other secret arrangements or divided loyalties, your peace of mind will be lost. Stay centered in your own truth instead of hedging your bets.

  2. Line 2 ·

Line 2, the crane calling in the shade: a crane calls from a hidden place and its young answers, and the speaker offers to share a fine cup of wine. Sincerity resonates naturally between kindred spirits, even unseen and across a distance. This is one of the most favorable changing lines for friendship, love and cooperation. Speak from the heart, and those who feel the same tend to respond.

  3. Line 3 ·

Line 3, finding a counterpart: drumming one moment and falling silent the next, weeping and then singing. Your emotional balance depends entirely on another person, so your mood rises and falls with theirs. Whether the feeling is joy or sorrow matters less than the dependence itself, so find your own center and meet the other person from a place of stability.

  4. Line 4 ·

Line 4, the moon nearly full: you are close to the height of your influence, which is exactly when humility matters most. One horse of the pair runs off, meaning you may need to part from a former companion or faction in order to align with what is higher and truer. There is no blame in this.

  5. Line 5 ·

Line 5, sincerity that binds: the person in the leading position possesses genuine trustworthiness, and it holds others together like a firm clasp. This is the strength that keeps a family, team or partnership united. There is no blame; keep leading by example.

  6. Line 6 ·

Line 6, the rooster's cry climbing to heaven: the cry rises high, but the rooster itself cannot fly. Words, claims or ambitions have outrun their substance, and persisting in this brings misfortune. Bring your promises back down to what you can actually do.
