Hexagram 49: Ge, Revolution

Hexagram 49, Ge (Revolution), means change whose time has truly come: an old form has worn out and must be shed, the way an animal molts its coat when the season turns. Such a change succeeds when it is well timed, clearly explained and built on trust.

The original text of Hexagram 49

The judgment

澤火革:已日乃孚,元亨。利貞。悔亡。

The judgment says that a change is believed only once its day has come, and that it then brings great success, rewards steadiness and makes regret disappear. It even carries the four great qualities that open the very first hexagram, a sign of how highly the I Ching values a change made at the right moment. In practice, timing creates trust: a reform that looks reckless too early looks obvious once conditions are ripe, and confidence keeps growing as the change proves itself. If your motives are sound and the moment is right, the doubts and second thoughts that usually follow upheaval fade away.

The image

澤中有火,革;君子以治歷明時。

The image is fire inside the lake: flame and water cannot share a space without one transforming the other. The wise person responds by organizing the calendar so that the turning of the seasons is clearly marked. In daily life, this asks you to read the rhythm of your situation, name turning points openly and plan changes so that everyone knows what is coming and when.

Hexagram 49 meaning

The meaning of Hexagram 49, Ge (革), centers on a transformation that can no longer be postponed. The character ge first referred to an animal hide, and by extension to the way a creature sheds its old coat as the seasons change. Molting is not optional: when the time comes, the old covering has to go. This hexagram tends to appear when a structure, habit, role or relationship pattern has outlived its purpose and the pressure for renewal is real.

The trigrams show the tension. Fire (Li) burns below and the Lake (Dui) rests above. Fire dries up water and water puts out fire, so the two are locked in a contest that can only end in change. In the trigram family they are also two sisters, the middle and the youngest daughter, living under one roof with different wishes. That picture fits many modern situations: a team, family or partnership whose members have quietly grown in different directions until something has to give.

Yet the inner qualities of the trigrams are reassuring. Fire stands for clarity and the Lake for joy, so the ideal change here is clear-sighted on the inside and welcome on the outside. Revolution in this sense is not destruction for its own sake but a renewal that people can understand and eventually feel glad about. Classical tradition linked this hexagram with the founding of new dynasties, when an old order had lost its legitimacy and a new one had to earn the trust of the people.

The six lines trace the arc of any real change. The first line holds back, the second acts once the day has come, the third debates and tests the plan, the fourth carries out the decisive shift, the fifth leads it with the clarity of a tiger, and the top line refines and settles the new order. Read the hexagram as a sequence: prepare, wait for the right moment, discuss, act, lead, then consolidate.

Hexagram 49 in love and relationships

In love, Hexagram 49 says an old pattern is ready to be shed. If you are single, the change may begin with you: a new way of choosing partners, letting go of a type that never works, or releasing an outdated self-image so that someone new can see who you are now. If you are dating, the relationship may be moving from casual to serious, or it may need an honest talk about what has quietly changed between you. Couples often meet this hexagram when roles, routines or expectations no longer fit, for example after a move, a new baby, a career shift or simply years of growing as individuals. The advice is to change the form so that the bond can survive, rather than clinging to a shape that has become a cage. For reconciliation, Ge is clear: going back only works if something real is different this time and both people can see it. Trust grows after the change is shown, not before, so give it time and let actions do the talking.

Hexagram 49 for career and money

At work, Hexagram 49 points to restructuring, a change of direction, a new role or a fresh approach to an old problem. It favors reform when the need is obvious to others as well, and when you have done the groundwork: listened, gathered facts and tested your proposal. If you are leading change, explain why it is needed, set a clear timeline and expect some skepticism until early results appear. If you are considering a career change, the hexagram supports it when the current path has truly run its course, but it asks you to prepare rather than leap out of frustration. In your studies, it can mean switching methods, subjects or schools. Where money is concerned, it invites you to review habits and systems that no longer serve you, as a prompt for reflection and careful planning rather than sudden moves.

What Hexagram 49 advises now

Now is the time to name what has truly outlived its purpose and to plan its replacement with care. Gather support, talk the change through until it makes sense to others, choose your moment, then act cleanly and wholeheartedly. Avoid changing things out of boredom, anger or a wish to prove a point, and do not insist that everyone agree inwardly; outward cooperation is often enough at first. In a yes or no question, Ge leans yes when the change is well prepared and timely, and wait when you are still at the early, unprepared stage. It describes a strong tendency toward necessary renewal, not a guarantee of how others will respond.

Changing lines of Hexagram 49

  1. Line 1 · 初九

    鞏用黃牛之革。

    象曰:鞏用黃牛,不可以有為也。

Line 1, bound in yellow oxhide: you are held back for good reason. Yellow is the color of the middle way and the ox stands for patience, so this line asks for restraint while the time for change has not yet come and you lack the position or support to carry it through. Keep your plans to yourself for now and strengthen your footing; a premature move would only discredit the change later.

  2. Line 2 · 六二

    已日乃革之,征吉,无咎。

    象曰:已日革之,行有嘉也。

Line 2, changing when the day has come: your preparation is complete, conditions have ripened and you have a strong ally above you. Now it is right to act, and going forward brings good fortune without blame. Move with confidence, but keep the calm, centered attitude that brought you to this point.

  3. Line 3 · 九三

    征凶,貞厲,革言三就,有孚。

    象曰:革言三就,又何之矣。

Line 3, talk of change goes around three times: rushing ahead brings misfortune, yet stubbornly holding to the old way is also dangerous. Discuss the proposal thoroughly, test it and refine it until it has been agreed upon more than once. When a plan has been examined from every side, people can trust it and you can commit to it.

  4. Line 4 · 九四

    悔亡,有孚改命,吉。

    象曰:改命之吉,信志也。

Line 4, changing the mandate: regret disappears because the change rests on sincerity. This is the line of the decisive shift, the moment when an old order is actually replaced. It brings good fortune when your motives are clean and your aim serves more than your own interest, so check your intentions honestly, then act firmly.

  5. Line 5 · 九五

    大人虎變,未占有孚。

    象曰:大人虎變,其文炳也。

Line 5, the great person transforms like a tiger: the change is bold, visible and unmistakable, like the clear stripes on a tiger's coat. People trust it even before any oracle is consulted, because its rightness is plain to see. Lead openly and with conviction; your clarity is your strongest argument.

  6. Line 6 · 上六

    君子豹變,小人革面,征凶,居貞吉。

    象曰:君子豹變,其文蔚也。小人革面,順以從君也。

Line 6, the leopard's change: the noble one refines the new order like a leopard's fine markings, while ordinary people change only their faces. The great change is over, and many will adapt on the surface, which is acceptable for now. Do not push for further upheaval or demand total inner conversion; staying put and consolidating what has been achieved brings good fortune.

Hexagram 49: common questions

Is hexagram 49 good for love?

It can be, especially when a relationship needs renewal. Hexagram 49 favors honest change such as new roles, new agreements or a fresh start built on what both people have learned. It is less favorable for trying to restore an old pattern exactly as it was.

What does hexagram 49 mean in a yes or no question?

It leans yes for a change that is well prepared and arrives at the right moment. If you are still at the very beginning, without support or a clear plan, read it as wait and prepare. Either way, success comes from timing and trust rather than force.

What if line 5 is a changing line in hexagram 49?

Line 5 is the leader's line, the tiger whose change is bold and obvious to everyone. It suggests your direction is clear enough that others will follow without much persuasion. Act openly, take responsibility for the change and let your consistency build trust.

What is the difference between hexagram 49 and hexagram 50?

Hexagram 50, the Cauldron, is Hexagram 49 turned upside down, and the two belong together. Revolution removes the old form, while the Cauldron establishes and nourishes the new order that follows. Together they describe a full cycle of transformation: shedding what no longer works, then building something that can feed people for a long time.
