The original text of Hexagram 42
The judgment
風雷益:利有攸往。利涉大川。
The judgment is brief and openly encouraging: it is favorable to have a goal and set out toward it, and favorable even to cross the great river. Crossing a great river was the ancient picture of a risky but worthwhile venture, such as a move, a launch or a decisive commitment. Increase happens when those who have more give to those who have less, so this time favors generosity as much as ambition. When resources, goodwill and timing line up like this, hesitation wastes the opportunity.
The image
風雷,益;君子以見善則遷,有過則改。
Wind and thunder strengthen each other: thunder rouses, and wind carries the effect far and wide. The noble person applies this to character, moving toward what is good as soon as it is recognized and changing course the moment a fault comes to light. Real increase, in this view, begins with self-improvement that is quick, practical and continuous.
Hexagram 42 meaning
The meaning of hexagram 42 is increase that comes from a generous flow downward. The lower trigram is Thunder (Zhen), movement and initiative, and the upper trigram is Wind (Xun), gentle penetration and steady spreading. Tradition sees this figure as Hexagram 12, Standstill, after one strong line from the upper trigram has come down to the very bottom, so the top gives up something to strengthen the base. When leaders, parents, mentors or institutions invest in those beneath them, everyone gains, and the gladness of those who receive spreads without limit.
Yi describes a favorable tide. Support is available, ideas find an audience, and action meets less resistance than usual. Wind, which also stands for wood, moving above thunder suggests a wooden boat driven forward with energy, which is why the judgment speaks of crossing the great river: plans that would be too risky at other times have a better chance now. The opportunity is time-sensitive, however, because no increase lasts forever.
The lines show how to handle growth well. The first line, the strong line that arrived at the bottom, is encouraged to use what it has received for a great work, on the condition that the result is excellent. The second and fifth lines show that blessings come to those who stay sincere and kind, while the third and fourth lines show that even emergencies and major relocations can become gains when one acts honestly and keeps to the middle path. The sixth line, by contrast, warns that someone who only wants more for themselves turns increase into hostility.
Hexagram 42 is the reverse of Hexagram 41, Sun (Decrease), and the two are meant to be read together: what was trimmed in a season of decrease returns as growth in a season of increase. Yi asks you to keep the circle open. Receive with gratitude, put gains to good use and pass some of the benefit on, because the moment you hoard the flow, it starts to dry up.
Hexagram 42 in love and relationships
In love, hexagram 42 is one of the more encouraging signs you can receive, because it speaks of growth, generosity and fresh energy. If you are single, it favors taking the initiative, accepting introductions and letting people see your warmth; thunder starts things and wind lets them unfold gently, so be bold in reaching out and patient while a connection deepens. If you are dating, the relationship can move forward, but growth depends on both people investing time and kindness rather than waiting to receive. In a committed partnership, this is a good moment to build something together, whether that means planning a shared goal, improving habits that strain the bond or simply offering more appreciation. The image's advice to adopt what is good and correct what is wrong applies directly: notice what works between you and do more of it, and own your mistakes quickly. Reconciliation is possible when the gesture comes from a genuinely kind heart that asks for nothing back, as the fifth line suggests; it is less likely if either person keeps score or acts inconsistently, which is the warning of the top line.
Hexagram 42 for career and money
Professionally, hexagram 42 points to expansion, backing and opportunity. It is a favorable time to start a project, pitch an idea, ask a mentor for support, apply for a role or take on a challenge that stretches you, because the environment tends to reward initiative. If you lead others, the hexagram suggests investing in your team, sharing credit and resources and letting benefits flow down; loyalty and results tend to rise in return. For students, it favors new courses, steady practice and correcting weak areas promptly. Financially, it describes a period in which inflows and openings may increase, but the warning of the sixth line is clear: greed, short-term grabbing or erratic decisions can quickly reverse the trend. Consider using any gain to build something lasting instead of spending it on show.
What Hexagram 42 advises now
Act while the wind is behind you. Choose the project, conversation or commitment that matters most and move on it now, using whatever help is being offered. Make each gain count by applying it to something substantial, and keep improving in small, practical ways: copy a good habit you notice in someone else, and drop a fault as soon as you see it. Avoid hoarding, taking more than your share or changing your intentions from day to day, since the hexagram's only warning concerns selfish and unsteady hearts. For a yes or no question, hexagram 42 leans clearly toward yes, especially for ventures, moves, learning and acts of generosity. If the question involves benefiting only yourself at someone else's expense, read it as a caution instead.
Changing lines of Hexagram 42
Line 1 · 初九
利用為大作,元吉,无咎。
象曰:元吉无咎,下不厚事也。
Using support for a great undertaking: the strong line at the bottom receives help from above and is told to put it toward something important. Great good fortune and no blame are promised, but only if the work is truly excellent, because someone in a modest position is judged by results. Use the opportunity for something meaningful and see it through thoroughly.
Line 2 · 六二
或益之,十朋之龜弗克違,永貞吉。王用享于帝,吉。
象曰:或益之,自外來也。
Someone adds to your fortune, and not even a precious oracle tortoise could refuse it: blessings reach this line from many directions. Lasting steadiness is the condition for good fortune, and the picture of the king presenting an offering to the Lord on High suggests that sincere devotion to a larger purpose is rewarded. Accept help, stay consistent and remember where your support comes from.
Line 3 · 六三
益之用凶事,无咎。有孚中行,告公用圭。
象曰:益用凶事,固有之也。
Increase through unfortunate events: this line gains something through difficulty, as when a hardship forces growth or resources are used to relieve a crisis. It stays blameless as long as you remain sincere, keep to the middle way and report honestly to those in charge, carrying the jade tablet that stood for trustworthiness. When this line changes, a problem may become a turning point if you handle it transparently and through proper channels.
Line 4 · 六四
中行,告公從。利用為依遷國。
象曰:告公從,以益志也。
The trusted go-between: walking the middle path, this line advises the prince, and the advice is followed. It can even be relied upon when the capital itself is moved, which points to relocations, restructurings and major transitions. If you are asked to mediate or help with a big move, your balanced judgment is an asset, so stay fair to all sides.
Line 5 · 九五
有孚惠心,勿問元吉。有孚惠我德。
象曰:有孚惠心,勿問之矣。惠我德,大得志也。
A sincere and kind heart needs no oracle: when you truly wish others well, great good fortune is assured without even asking. People recognize that goodness and return it as trust and gratitude. Give because it is right rather than to secure a reward, and the reward tends to come on its own.
Line 6 · 上九
莫益之,或擊之,立心勿恆,凶。
象曰:莫益之,偏辭也。或擊之,自外來也。
Nobody adds to it, and someone may even strike it: this line sits at the end of increase and still wants more. Because its heart is unsteady and its aims shift with self-interest, it attracts resistance instead of help. When this line changes, stop grasping, keep your intentions consistent and share what you have before the tide turns.
Hexagram 42: common questions
Is hexagram 42 a good sign?

What does hexagram 42 mean for love?
For love, hexagram 42 suggests a relationship that grows when both people give generously and keep improving themselves. Singles are encouraged to take the initiative, and couples to build shared goals. Reconciliation is favored when the gesture is kind and asks for nothing in return.
Is hexagram 42 a yes or no?
Hexagram 42 leans toward yes, particularly for starting projects, making moves, studying and helping others. The judgment's favorable outlook on crossing the great river supports taking a well-considered risk. It turns into a caution only if your aim is purely selfish.
Is hexagram 42 Yi the same as hexagram 27 Yi?
No. Hexagram 42 is 益, Increase, while Hexagram 27 is 頤, Nourishment, also spelled Yi in pinyin but written with a different character and tone. They share a sound, not a meaning, so check the number when you look up your reading.

The top line warns that when increase turns into grasping, help dries up and resentment grows. It asks you to steady your intentions and share rather than accumulate. As the only changing line, it leads to Hexagram 3, Zhun (Difficulty at the Beginning), hinting that a selfish turn now could mean starting over under harder conditions.
