Hexagram 30: Li, The Clinging Fire
Hexagram 30, Li, means clarity that depends on what it clings to: like fire, your light, warmth and understanding need the right fuel and support to burn steadily. Its meaning favors brightness and insight that are grounded in humility and care.

The original text of Hexagram 30
The judgment
離為火:利貞。亨。畜牝牛,吉。
Steadiness and integrity are favored, and there is success. Then comes an unusual instruction: raising a cow brings good fortune. The cow, gentle, patient and receptive, is the counterweight to fire's restless brilliance. The judgment says that clarity and passion go well when they are anchored in gentleness and care, and in an honest acceptance of how much they depend on what sustains them.
The image
明兩作離,大人以繼明照于四方。
Light is born twice over, one brightness following another in the doubled fire of Li. The great person carries this light forward without a break, letting it shine in every direction. The image asks you to make your clarity continuous rather than occasional: keep renewing your understanding and share it widely, so that it lights the way for others as well as for yourself.
Hexagram 30 meaning
The meaning of Hexagram 30 centers on Li, the trigram of fire, light, the sun and seeing. The name carries two ideas at once, clinging and brightness, because fire has no form of its own: it exists only by attaching itself to wood, oil or a wick. Light, too, depends on its source. Doubled here, Fire above Fire, Li describes a time of illumination, visibility and awareness, and it asks what your brightness is clinging to.
Each Li trigram shows a yielding line held between two strong lines, an open center surrounded by radiance. This open center is the secret of the hexagram, because the brightest awareness is receptive rather than grasping. That is why the judgment pairs fire with a cow. Clinging rightly means depending on what is true and nourishing, the way plants cling to the soil or eyes rely on light, rather than clutching at whatever burns you out.
The six lines trace something like the course of a day and of a life. Morning begins with many crisscrossing footsteps and calls for respect and attention. Noon is the golden light of balance. Late afternoon brings the sinking sun and the choice between singing and lamenting. The fourth line is a fire that flares and dies, the fifth turns sorrow into good fortune, and the sixth uses clarity to correct what is wrong at its source.
In a reading, Hexagram 30 often highlights visibility, passion, creativity, intelligence and relationships of mutual dependence. It is a positive sign when your light is steady and grounded, and a warning when it is flaring wildly or feeding on the wrong fuel. Paired with Hexagram 29, Kan, it completes the first half of the I Ching's sequence: the depth of water followed by the clarity of fire.
Hexagram 30 in love and relationships
In love, Hexagram 30 brings warmth, attraction and visibility. If you are single, it is a good time to let your light be seen, to show up, share your interests and allow your personality to shine; attraction tends to follow clarity. Beware the flash romance of the fourth line, though, since something that flares suddenly may burn out just as fast. If you are dating, notice what the connection depends on. Healthy attachment, where each person supports the other's light, is favored, while clinging out of fear or need is not. For couples, the hexagram asks for steady warmth rather than bursts of drama, and for clear, honest communication; the image of the cow suggests gentleness and patience as the fuel of a lasting flame. In reconciliation questions, seek clarity first by understanding what went wrong and what each of you relied on. A rekindled fire lasts only if it has better fuel than before.
Hexagram 30 for career and money
For career, Hexagram 30 favors visibility and clear thinking. It supports presentations, writing, teaching, design, media, consulting and any work that illuminates ideas or helps people understand. It also asks what your work depends on: a good team, a solid structure, a mentor, sound values. Choose those supports carefully and treat them well. Avoid flashy moves that draw attention but lack substance, and watch for burnout, since fire consumes what it rests on. Students can expect insight to come through attentive, receptive learning. With money, the hexagram favors steady effort and a reliable source over sudden flare-ups of risk, because brilliance alone does not keep the fire fed.
What Hexagram 30 advises now
Let your clarity shine, but ground it in humility and steady care. Choose carefully what you attach yourself to, whether people, goals or beliefs, and keep your energy sustainable rather than explosive. Accept change gracefully, as the image of the setting sun teaches. Avoid sudden aggressive moves, burning out, clinging out of fear or chasing attention for its own sake. In a yes or no question, Hexagram 30 leans yes when the matter is clear, honest and supported by something reliable, and leans toward caution when it depends on a sudden flare of passion or an unstable source. Take this as a tendency, not a promise.
Changing lines of Hexagram 30
Line 1 · 初九
履錯然,敬之无咎。
象曰:履錯之敬,以辟咎也。
Crisscrossing footsteps: the bustle of early morning, with many impressions and directions at once. As a changing line, it asks you to slow down and approach the beginning with attention and respect. Careful focus at the start keeps mistakes away.
Line 2 · 六二
黃離,元吉。
象曰:黃離元吉,得中道也。
Yellow light: the golden, balanced light of the center, bringing the highest good fortune. When this line changes, moderation and harmony are your greatest strengths. Stay centered, avoid extremes and let your clarity be warm rather than harsh.
Line 3 · 九三
日昃之離,不鼓缶而歌,則大耋之嗟,凶。
象曰:日昃之離,何可久也。
The light of the setting sun: late in the day, you can either tap a clay pot and sing, or groan about growing old. If this is your changing line, accept the passing of time and enjoy what is present rather than mourning what is ending. The misfortune lies in despair, not in the change itself.
Line 4 · 九四
突如其來如,焚如,死如,棄如。
象曰:突如其來如,无所容也。
The sudden fire: it bursts in without warning, blazes up, burns out and is discarded. When this line moves, beware of rash, aggressive moves or intense flare-ups that consume themselves. Choose sustained warmth over a dramatic blaze.
Line 5 · 六五
出涕沱若,戚嗟若,吉。
象曰:六五之吉,離王公也。
Tears in streams and sighs of sorrow: grief and heartfelt concern lead, surprisingly, to good fortune. As a changing line, it shows that genuine feeling and an honest acknowledgment of difficulty bring a change of heart and real improvement. Do not hide your sorrow; let it soften and clarify you.
Line 6 · 上九
王用出征,有嘉折首,獲匪其醜,无咎。
象曰:王用出征,以正邦也。
The king's campaign: the ruler sends out a force that deals with the ringleader of the trouble rather than the rank and file. When this line changes, act decisively against the root of a problem, such as a central bad habit or a source of conflict, without punishing everything around it. Firm correction, aimed precisely, carries no blame.
Hexagram 30: common questions
Is hexagram 30 good for love?
Generally yes. Hexagram 30 brings warmth, attraction and clarity, especially when the relationship is steady and both partners support each other's light. It warns against sudden flames that burn out quickly and against clinging out of fear.
What does hexagram 30 mean in a yes or no question?
It usually leans yes when the situation is clear and grounded and you stay gentle and steady. If line 4 is changing, the answer tilts toward no, because that line warns of a rash flare-up that burns out. Line 2 as a changing line is especially favorable.
What does the cow mean in hexagram 30?
The cow represents gentleness, patience and receptivity, the qualities that balance fire's brightness. Raising a cow means cultivating these qualities so that your clarity is grounded rather than restless. It suggests that steady, humble care keeps a flame burning longer.
What if line 3 of hexagram 30 is changing?
Line 3 is the light of the setting sun, the moment to either sing or lament the passing of time. It advises accepting change and enjoying the present rather than mourning what is ending. With only this line changing, the reading moves toward Hexagram 21, Shi He (Biting Through), which points to meeting reality head-on instead of lamenting it.
