The original text of Hexagram 26
The judgment
山天大畜:利貞,不家食吉,利涉大川。
Steadiness and integrity are favored. The judgment then says that fortune favors eating away from home: talent that has been built up should not stay private but go out and serve in a wider setting, where it is valued and put to use. In old terms, a capable person is supported at court rather than at the family table. Finally, it is favorable to cross the great river, a classic signal that a major undertaking, journey or risk is worth attempting once your strength has been gathered.
The image
天在山中,大畜;君子以多識前言往行,以畜其德。
Heaven is pictured inside the mountain: vast creative energy stored within something solid and still. The wise person responds by learning widely from the words and deeds of those who came before, and by using what they learn to build up character. The image asks you to treat this period as a time of storage and study: absorb experience, learn from history and from mentors, and let it deepen who you are, not just what you know.
Hexagram 26 meaning
The meaning of Hexagram 26 in the I Ching revolves around the word Chu, which can mean to restrain, to store and to raise, all at once. Da Chu, the Great Taming, describes a time when great strength is held back on purpose so that it can accumulate and mature. It is the larger, stronger version of Hexagram 9, Xiao Chu, where a single soft line can only briefly check the strong; here the restraint is solid and the reserves are deep.
Below is Qian, Heaven, three firm lines of creative drive. Above is Gen, Mountain, the trigram of stillness and stopping. The mountain sits on top of heaven's energy and keeps it in, the way a dam holds water or an athlete holds back in training. That containment is not oppression; it is what gives the energy depth. The yielding fifth line, in the ruler's place, defers to the strong top line, a picture of a leader who honors wisdom and keeps capable people close.
The lines tell a story of restraint and release. The first two strong lines are checked: the first should stop because there is danger, and the second takes the axle-block out of its own cart. The fourth and fifth lines are the restrainers, and they succeed by acting early and wisely, fitting a guard on a young bull's horns and taming a boar at the root of its aggression. The third line can begin to move with daily practice, and at the top the road of heaven opens wide.
In practice, Hexagram 26 often appears when you have more energy, ambition or ability than your current outlet can handle. Its advice is to train, save, study and prepare, trusting that held energy is not wasted energy. When the time comes, it supports stepping out of your comfort zone into a bigger arena, taking on responsibility and attempting something genuinely ambitious.
Hexagram 26 in love and relationships
In love, Hexagram 26 speaks of building something with real reserves. If you are single, this is a strong time to invest in yourself, your interests and your friendships; the person you meet is likely to be drawn to the depth you are building, and meetings through study, travel or a shared project are especially fitting. If you are dating, hold back from rushing intimacy or commitment before you know each other's character, since restraint now gives the bond a firmer base. For couples, the hexagram encourages shared long-term goals, building toward something together and taming the habits that cause friction while they are still small, like guarding a young bull's horns before they can hurt anyone. It can also suggest that the relationship benefits from going outward together, into a wider social circle or a joint venture, rather than staying closed up at home. If you are hoping for reconciliation, patience and visible self-discipline matter more than grand gestures; show steady change, and do not force a meeting before both sides are ready.
Hexagram 26 for career and money
For career, Hexagram 26 is a builder's sign. It favors training, gaining qualifications, learning from experienced people and steadily accumulating skills and resources before making your big move. The phrase about eating away from home suggests that your abilities are meant to be used in a wider sphere: a larger organization, public service, a more visible role, or work that takes you away from home. Once you are prepared, the judgment supports a major undertaking, such as a new venture, a demanding project or a career leap. Students benefit from deep, patient study rather than shortcuts. With money, the tendency is toward accumulation and self-control; impulsive spending or overreaching tends to undermine the reserves this period is trying to build.
What Hexagram 26 advises now
Now is the time to gather strength rather than spend it. Practice daily, study, conserve energy and resources, and deal with small problems before they grow large. Avoid charging ahead when you feel blocked, and avoid wasting stored power on impatience or minor battles; the early lines are clear that stopping is wise when there is danger. When conditions open up, be ready to move boldly into a larger setting. In a yes or no question, Hexagram 26 leans yes for ambitious, long-term aims you have prepared for, and leans wait if you are still building skills or if the first or second line is changing. Read it as a tendency, not a guarantee.
Changing lines of Hexagram 26
Line 1 · 初九
有厲利已。
象曰:有厲利已,不犯災也。
Danger ahead, so stop: the strong first line wants to advance but is firmly held back. As a changing line, it says that halting now is wisdom, not defeat. Use the pause to strengthen your position, and resist forcing a move that circumstances are clearly blocking.
Line 2 · 九二
輿說輹。
象曰:輿說輹,中无尤也。
The cart with its axle-block removed: you disable your own wagon and choose not to travel for now. When this line changes, accept the restraint calmly and without resentment, because waiting from a balanced, central position is the correct stance. There is no fault in staying put while your strength grows.
Line 3 · 九三
良馬逐,利艱貞,吉。日閑輿衛,利有攸往。
象曰:利有攸往,上合志也。
Good horses galloping: the road is beginning to open and you can move fast. If this is your changing line, advance, but stay mindful of difficulty and keep drilling your skills and your defenses every day. Discipline and preparation are what turn speed into real progress.
Line 4 · 六四
童牛之牿,元吉。
象曰:六四元吉,有喜也。
The guard on the young bull's horns: a wooden board fixed to a calf's horns before they can do any damage. When this line moves, deal with problems early, while they are still small and easy to guide. Prevention now brings great good fortune and saves conflict later.
Line 5 · 六五
豶豕之牙,吉。
象曰:六五之吉,有慶也。
The tusks of the gelded boar: a dangerous animal becomes harmless when its aggression is addressed at the source rather than by fighting its tusks. As a changing line, it asks you to find the root cause of a problem and work there, calmly and indirectly. This is skilled, intelligent restraint, and it brings good fortune.
Line 6 · 上九
何天之衢,亨。
象曰:何天之衢,道大行也。
The highway of heaven: the long restraint ends, and the road opens in every direction. When this line changes, what you have stored up can flow freely into action and success. Step forward with confidence, because this is the moment your preparation was for.
Hexagram 26: common questions
Is hexagram 26 good for love?
Generally yes, especially for long-term relationships. Hexagram 26 favors patience, shared goals and a strong foundation rather than rushing ahead. It asks you to tame small problems early and keep growing as a person, which tends to make a relationship more stable.
What does hexagram 26 mean in a yes or no question?

What if line 6 of hexagram 26 is changing?
Line 6 is the highway of heaven, the moment when restraint ends and the way opens fully. It suggests that your preparation is complete and success is within reach. With only this line changing, the reading moves toward Hexagram 11, Tai (Peace), a picture of free flow and harmony.
