Hexagram 12: Pi, Standstill

Hexagram 12, Pi, describes standstill: a time when heaven and earth drift apart and communication breaks down. Its meaning is to protect your integrity, keep a low profile and wait out the blockage, because no standstill lasts forever.

The original text of Hexagram 12

The judgment

天地否:否之匪人,不利君子貞,大往小來。

The judgment says that standstill comes from the wrong people, that it does not favor the steadfastness of the noble person, and that the great goes while the small comes. It describes a time when influence passes to those with narrow or self-serving aims, and when honest effort finds little response. Pushing your principles hard in such a climate tends to bring frustration rather than progress. The text is not asking you to give up your values; it is asking you to recognize the season and act accordingly. This hexagram mirrors Hexagram 11, so what has turned once can turn again.

The image

天地不交,否;君子以儉德辟難,不可榮以祿。

Heaven and earth do not meet, and the noble person responds by holding back their gifts to avoid trouble, refusing to be won over by rank or salary. Practically, this means living simply, keeping your best qualities out of the spotlight, and declining rewards that would tie you to a situation you do not respect. It asks for quiet integrity: hold your values privately, avoid entanglements, and wait for a better time to bring them forward.

Hexagram 12 meaning

The meaning of Hexagram 12, Pi (否), is standstill, also called stagnation or obstruction. It is the exact reverse of Hexagram 11, Tai: where Tai shows heaven and earth meeting in harmony, Pi shows them pulling away from each other. Things stop flowing, people stop understanding one another, and effort seems to disappear without result.

The structure makes this visible. The upper trigram is Qian, Heaven, which naturally rises, and the lower is Kun, Earth, which naturally sinks. With heaven already on top and earth already below, each moves further from the other and there is no exchange between them. The three yielding lines are inside and the three strong lines outside, a picture of weakness at the core behind a hard surface, and of petty influences moving in while the worthy are kept at a distance.

In life, Pi can look like an organization where decisions are made by the wrong people, a relationship where conversations go nowhere, a market that has frozen, or a personal phase when nothing you try seems to land. It can be discouraging, and the temptation is either to force your way through or to compromise your values in order to fit in. The hexagram advises neither.

Instead, Pi asks for inner steadiness and outer restraint. Keep your standards, but do not waste energy fighting the whole climate. Stay close to people you trust, simplify your needs, and avoid accepting favors that would compromise you. The lines trace a clear progression: withdrawal and endurance at the bottom, shame and a turning point in the middle, and the standstill finally overturned at the top. Stagnation is a phase, and the upper lines show the people who help bring it to an end.

Hexagram 12 in love and relationships

In love, Hexagram 12 often describes distance and poor communication. If you are single, it may feel hard to meet the right people, or you may notice yourself drawn to connections that do not share your values; this is a good time to focus on yourself rather than lowering your standards to escape loneliness. If you are dating, conversations may stall or feel one-sided, and it is wise not to force commitment while you do not feel truly understood. In a long relationship, Pi can mark a cold spell in which both partners retreat into their own worlds; small, honest gestures and patient listening help more than dramatic confrontations, and it is worth looking at the outside pressures that may be pulling you apart. For reconciliation, the hexagram usually suggests waiting, because the channels between you are blocked for now and pushing could widen the distance. Protect your self-respect, stay kind, and watch for genuine signs that the other person is ready to meet you.

Hexagram 12 for career and money

At work, Pi points to obstruction: stalled projects, unresponsive leadership, office politics or a market that has gone quiet. Your ideas may be overlooked, or rewards may go to people who play the game rather than do the work. The image advises keeping a low profile, doing solid work without chasing attention, and turning down promotions or deals that would require you to compromise your integrity. It can be a good period for quiet learning, building skills and strengthening a small network of trustworthy colleagues, so you are ready when the climate changes. For students, progress may feel slow, so focus on fundamentals rather than results. Financially, caution is favored: avoid big new commitments and speculative moves during a standstill, and conserve resources until conditions open up again.

What Hexagram 12 advises now

Keep your head down and your standards up. Simplify, conserve energy, and stay close to people you can trust. Use this time for reflection, preparation and inner work rather than public moves. Avoid forcing negotiations, chasing status, or making compromises you will regret just to break the deadlock. For a yes or no question, Hexagram 12 leans toward not now: the timing does not yet support your aim, and patience is likely to serve you better than pressure. This is a tendency, not a verdict, and the upper lines show that standstill can and does end.

Changing lines of Hexagram 12

  1. Line 1 · 初六

    拔茅茹以其彙,貞吉。亨。

    象曰:拔茅貞吉,志在君也。

Line 1, pulling up grass with its roots: as in Hexagram 11, people of the same kind move together, but here they move away from a bad situation rather than toward success. Staying firm brings good fortune and, in time, success. If this line is changing, withdraw together with like-minded people and keep your principles intact.

  2. Line 2 · 六二

    包承,小人吉,大人否。亨。

    象曰:大人否,亨。不亂群也。

Line 2, bearing and complying: petty people get along by enduring and flattering those above, and for them it works. The great person accepts the standstill instead, and by refusing to compromise eventually finds success. When this line is changing, do not trade your integrity for comfort, even if the compliant path looks easier.

  3. Line 3 · 六三

    包羞。

    象曰:包羞,位不當也。

Line 3, bearing shame: someone has risen to a position they did not earn, and inwardly they feel the shame of it. This awareness is the first sign that things can change. If this line is changing, admit privately what is not right in your situation, because honest recognition is where turning it around begins.

  4. Line 4 · 九四

    有命,无咎,疇離祉。

    象曰:有命无咎,志行也。

Line 4, acting on a calling: the standstill begins to turn, and whoever acts from a higher mandate or a genuine sense of purpose meets no blame. Companions share in the blessing. When this line is changing, step forward for a cause larger than yourself and invite others to join you.

  5. Line 5 · 九五

    休否,大人吉。其亡其亡,繫于苞桑。

    象曰:大人之吉,位正當也。

Line 5, tied to the mulberry: the great person brings the standstill to rest and meets good fortune. Yet they keep asking themselves what would happen if it all failed, and they bind their success to a clump of mulberry shoots, whose roots are deep and tough. If this line is changing, act to end the impasse but stay vigilant, and secure your gains on strong foundations.

  6. Line 6 · 上九

    傾否,先否後喜。

    象曰:否終則傾,何可長也。

Line 6, the standstill is overturned: first there is obstruction, then joy. Stagnation does not simply fade here; it ends through active effort at the right moment. When this line is changing, it is time to push the blockage over and welcome the relief that follows.

Hexagram 12: common questions

Is Hexagram 12 a bad sign?

Hexagram 12 is challenging rather than doomed. It describes stagnation and poor communication, so it advises patience, integrity and a low profile. The upper lines show the standstill ending, which makes it a phase to navigate, not a final outcome.

Is Hexagram 12 good for love?

It usually points to distance, mismatched timing or communication that is not getting through. It is better for reflection and self-respect than for pushing commitments. Gentle patience gives the relationship its best chance once the cold spell passes.

What does Hexagram 12 mean in a yes or no question?

It leans toward not now. The conditions for success are blocked at the moment, and forcing the issue tends to backfire. Wait for clearer signs of openness before trying again.

What if line 5 of Hexagram 12 is changing?

Line 5 is the turning point, where a capable person brings the standstill to a halt. It encourages decisive action combined with caution, securing your gains as if tying them to deep-rooted mulberry. The changing line turns Pi into Hexagram 35, Jin, Progress, a hopeful sign of advance.
