The Celtic Cross is one of tarot's most classic spreads, and one of the easiest to overcomplicate. Its logic becomes clearer when you see two structures: the central cross on the left and the rising staff on the right.
1. The central cross
- Card 1 is the present: your current state and focus inside the question.
- Card 2 is the obstacle: pressure, friction, timing, or a force crossing the present.
- Card 3 is the goal: the conscious hope or ideal.
- Card 4 is the foundation: unconscious motive, old cause, or emotional root.
- Card 5 is the past: what has moved away but still affects the moment.
- Card 6 is the near future: the next trend if nothing is deliberately changed.
2. The right-side staff
Card 7 shows your attitude, card 8 the environment, card 9 hopes and fears, and card 10 the outcome. Together they move the spread from “what is happening” to “how you are participating in it.”
3. Read the connections
Compare foundation and goal, self and environment, past and future. The Celtic Cross is less about forcing an answer and more about seeing the architecture of a situation.
